Surfing the Web: Escape Key (Chapter 6)
Kelsey and Valerie work together to figure a way back home.
"Kelsey! Kelsey, over here!" I lifted my head from my hands. The sound was coming from the ocean. I stood up and slowly strolled over to see who was there. It was my mom! She was staring back at me from my desk chair. It seemed like the picture was being projected on the ocean.
"Mom! How did you- Valerie, come over here!" I filled with a little bit of hope from seeing my mom. Valerie joined me. As soon as she saw my mom a big smile appeared on her face. She started explaining everything that happened.
"Dear, I know, I know. Calm down. I can help." My mom repeated. She knows? How could she know? Has she been watching?
"The truth is, I once downloaded this myself and I got stuck like you. But I loved my life back home, and I made it out of this mess." Mom explained. She was the person who Brent was talking about. The loner. And she knows how to get us out; we’re saved!
"So you can help us? Thank you, mom! Thank you so much. So what do we have to do? We just want out." A few tears squeezed out of my eyes.
"Honey, did Brent show you the surf shack when you first came." I nodded and she continued. "Let me ask you a question. How do you normally exit a computer program?"
"You click on the ‘x’" I guessed.
"Or you use the escape key." Valerie added.
Mom nodded. "Bingo! Inside the shack there is a key. Not a keyboard key; a key to unlock something. It should have an ‘E’ on it standing for ‘Escape’. Then somewhere on that tree the portal used to be on there is a lock. You’ll use the key on there and it’ll open the door. When you step through the door you’ll appear back here."
"What should I do with the key? And should I invite others to come with so they’re not trapped here anymore?" I question.
"Bring everyone except Brent. I don’t know what he might have told you but he started this whole thing. He was never trapped here. He was the trapper. Make sure he doesn’t know what you’re up to. He also knows about the key but when I stole it from him I hid it before I left. When you have everyone except Brent, bring them back to the tree and bring the key with you. When we’re all back here then we’ll find out where everyone lives and send them home. And do all this soon!" The picture faded away and Mom was gone. Valerie nodded in my direction and we both took off towards the shack. The sign said that they’ll be back in five minutes so we didn’t have a lot of time. We jumped the counter and split up. It wasn’t that large so we thought that we’d find it in time. Turns out we were wrong.
"Hey, you two, what are you doing?!" They were already back. It seemed like only a minute had gone by. "You’re not aloud back here!"
Valerie ran and made it up the hill, away from the shack. I, on the other hand, was grabbed by the person and they wouldn’t let me go. I heard them whisper in my ear, "Don’t’ worry, it’s me Shelley." She let go and I turned around. She had a cap shading her face and sunglasses on. She was obviously in disguise. She held up her hand and showed a key. The escape key.
"I heard your mom talking to your guys. Finally we can all get out! Come on, let’s go get your friend and gather all the others." She hid the key in her pocket and ran toward the diner. Outside on the bench was where Valerie was panting. Her eyes widened at the sight of the unknown person. I mouthed ‘Don’t worry’ and she calmed down. We all sat down and started working out our plan.
