Supplemental Dental Insurance: Types

For those without a very good dental plan, supplemental insurance can be purchased to bridge the gap between what you can pay and what you're current insurance actually pays. Learn about the different kinds of supplemental dental insurance types in this article.
Supplemental Dental Insurance: Types
In the event your work provided health coverage is insufficient for your families dentist needs, you can purchase a supplemental insurance that will pay the difference between what your current plan covers and what you don't have. This is especially helpful if the plan you have now doesn't cover very much or has a large co-pay requirement - especially for families on a limited budget.

There are essentially three basic types of dental coverage you can buy; namely a discount card plan, student plan, and access to a preferred provider network (PPN). Each has its own advantages; depending on your financial situation you will want to weigh the benefits of each and consider which is the best for you. The following is a brief overview of each, the decision you make likely depends on your families budget and needs:
  1. Discount Plan: The most common type, dental discount cards, isn't actually considered insurance - more like a coupon for discounted services. With this, you're essentially part of a group that works together to negotiate a lower rate for things like fillings and teeth cleaning, along with cheaper pricing on the more serious procedures. Usually dentists supervise the management of the discounts, and the group works together to be fair to one another.
  2. Student Plan:Student plans are also available, and are usually best suited for young adults and older teenagers right out of school. High school graduates aren't usually covered anymore by their parents insurance, and these student plans tailored towards those still in college are a good way to bridge the gap for those no longer insured by a likely better parental owned plan.
  3. Preferred Provider Network: The third type of supplemental insurance is the preferred provider network (PPN). This is a great plan for those looking for choice. Depending on the network you are in, you will have access to a group of dentists in a particular area that accept your coverage. You are free to choose between the dentists in the network at any time, and can even switch between dental practitioners depending on the services you need.
  4. As you can see, there are quite a few really good choices if you're looking for dental insurance. This includes student plans, discount cards and preferred providers. That's the great thing about getting choices, with the right expectations you'll find the best plan for you.
