SuperFoods By Dr. Perricone
According to information I read on Oprah Winfrey's website, Dr. Nicholas Perricone (who you may have heard of in the discussion of the acai berry) is a board-certified clinical and research dermatologist. This article details what he calls "ten superfoods."
If you take a look around, there are many foods that do the body and skin wonders. They can come in many forms, such as fruits, veggies, nuts, berries, or herbs. This is a look at ten superfoods that Dr. Perricone has identified, with a brief detail of each.
-Acai Berry
This berry needs no introduction. Found in the Amazon region of Brazil, acai berry can aid in slowing aging. It's been called the best antioxidant in the world, and it's now made it's way into eye creams for that reason.
-The Allium Family
Garlic lowers the bodies count of total cholesterol, can reduce the risk of hardening of the arteries, lowers blood pressure, destroys infection, reduces the risk of some cancers, and has also had success treating neurological diseases like Parkinson's.
Prime examples are onions and leeks.
-Barley
Barley has been cultivated for over 10,000 years and fights heart disease as well provides antioxidants.
-Beans and Lentils
A great source of protein and fiber comes from beans and lentils.
-Buckwheat
Buckwheat has been said to treat heart conditions and stabilize blood sugar levels.
-Green Foods
Green foods are a hot topic of discussion, and there is obviously a whole "go green" movement now. It's funny but green foods have been around for awhile, but are now getting the attention they deserve.
-Hot Peppers
This one surprised me, but hot peppers have anti-inflammatory traits. Surprising, but great for me as I love them!
-Nuts and Seeds
Nuts and seeds are great sources of protein and I've been told to use them as part of a healthy diet. However, they are also rich in antioxidants, which of course is another benefit.
-Sprouts
Spouts are healthy and not only provide the body with protein, but also many essential vitamins.
-Yogurt and Kefir
I had to look up what kefir was to be honest. It's a milk drink apparently which makes it similar to yogurt I guess. It's a great source of antioxidants and of course yogurt needs no introduction.
If you find yourself rarely eating any of the above foods, it's time to think about making a change in diet. Try to get as many antioxidants as you can, and don't forget, most of these foods are delicious as well!
