Sunrise: Chapter 17 - Reality Hits Her Hard

Hi friends! Hope you still remember the story. Sorry for the wait you all had to do. I was going through a tough schedule of my college and I am having my exams this week. In last chapter- Amelia went to see Jacob at the hospital and he asked her to fetch his books from his house. Read further, to find out who's going to be the lucky one today. Enjoy!
Chapter 17 - Reality Hits Her Hard

"Now where did I lose the text Jacob sent me?" I said to myself standing at his doorstep and searching through my phone.

"Oh, yeah, it's here." I said as I found it in the folder named 'Important Message'. I had saved it there so that it would be easier for me to find it, but I think doing that created more trouble than it would have created if I had left it in my inbox, untouched. It says to look me for the house key beneath the third flower pot on my right, "And here it is," I said picking up the key and moving towards the door to open it.

As the door opened I was met by a shrill bark and pitch dark, I know that rhymes, but it scared me to hell. My legs froze and got stuck with the ground, sending a chilling sensation upwards via my spine, radiating to my head.

Some furry animal came closer to me and sniffed my shoes. I was too afraid to even look down and see what it was, but I think I already knew that it was a dog and was dreading to let the reality sink in, coz it's a thing that will give me minor Angina Pectoris, (for nonsciencers that alien term means heart attacks) every time I happened to see it.

A continuous soft bark pulled my eyes downwards and forced me to look at the owner who possessed it. Form the dim light my eyes were able to make out a small figure, not more than the length of my palm, looking at me warmly with his dark shiny eyes. He had tilted his head backwards so much to look at me, that instantly the fear that I had of him biting me went out of the window and was replaced by the fear that he might stumble backwards and hurt himself.

I pushed a button of my cell phone and started searching for a light switch within my surrounding with the help of light coming from the screen of my phone. The hallway lit up as I pushed the switch I found on the wall on my right. I looked down to find the furry little puppy rubbing his side affectionately on my left leg.

"Aww, you are too cute to be scary." I said bending down and patting his head lightly. I got a soft bark in return may be as a 'thanks' for my compliment.

Now after overcoming both the hurdles, the dark and the bark, I went back to my mission. The text said to climb up the stairs and turn right and walk to the door of his room. I don't think finding his room would have been difficult for me without him mentioning the directions, coz there was only right side to turn after climbing the stairs and his was the only room that was upstairs. A small house indeed but it was simple and sweet, no expensive large paintings hanging on the walls or dark wood adoring the stairs, or thin delicate looking carpets hugging the floor, just the simple looking interiors a person like me would like to have.

I turned the knob and pushed open the door of his room. It was as if I were entering into someone else's territory. With the faint light coming from the hallway it was easier for me to search for the light switch of his room.

The walls of his room had what could be found in any other guy's room too. The posters of various cars and bikes I can't name and of a basketball and a soccer team that I couldn't recognize were posted on the walls. His room was more tidy than I would expect a guy's room to be. As I had been instructed in the text I went straight to his study table and fetched the books that I was asked to bring.

Turning off the lights and after closing the door, I started walking towards the stairs when I heard a faint bark coming from behind me. I immediately realized what I had done, turned around and opened the door to find a scary eyed puppy staring back at me.

"Aww, I am so sorry, I didn't know you followed me up there?" I said to him. He came out, and stood there looking at me till the time I closed the door again and started walking away.

I walked down the stairs and was about to switch off the hallway light when another soft bark interrupted me from doing that. I turned back to find him at the topmost stair looking at me and then at the stairs with a scared look in his eyes.

"And you were the one who tried to scare me when I entered." I said chuckling and moving towards him.

"How did you climb up when you don't know how to climb down?" I said picking him up in my arms and carrying him downstairs.

And I got a 'purry' response from this new 'furry' friend of mine.

"Is he asleep?" I asked the middle-aged nurse as she showed me the corridor in which Jacob's new room was now. I was happy he had gone through the phase that had him under constant observation of the doctors, and shifting to a less critical room meant he was somewhat out of any danger now.

"Yeah, he is on sedative."

"Why? Did he have some problem?"

"No, we have shifted him to the minor dose, but he still needs that to fight the pain. What's in that bag?"

"Umm this, nothing just some of my stuff."

"Okay, well you go and see him if you want to and I will be there in some time to change his bandages. It would be better if I do it now then do it when he is conscious, that will protect him from some of the extra pain," she said and started walking in the opposite direction.

I opened the door softly, kept the bag with his books on the couch and went to sit beside him. As I looked at his calm, uncreased face as he slept, I went back to the memories of the day when I had realized that my heart had fallen deeply in the deep ocean of love for him from where there is no coming back no matter how hard I might try to hit the water with my arms. The only option left for me at that time was to let myself get drowned, and I guess I had opted for the same.

Here I am watching this guy sleep, with love pouring down from my eyes as the saline liquid, coz he is not watching me right now, will I ever be able to confess my love to him?

I wiped my tears as I heard the door of the room open.

"So, here I am to clean his wounds. Would you like to step outside for a while or will you be able to watch the wounds? Coz I have witnessed many attendants faint at such time." The nurse asked as she pushed the trolley carrying the things required for dressing of the wound towards Jacob's bed.

"No, I am fine with the blood."

"As you say."

The wound on his forehead was a smaller one and would heal in a couple of days I assume. But when the nurse started removing the bandage from his left arm, I felt as if I would kill myself for being the cause of it. It was a long gash starting from his elbow and covering most of his forearm and ending near to his wrist, presumably given by a very sharp object.

"Do you know what thing inflicted that deep wound?" I asked the nurse.

"He said it was a knife. And this wound needs extra care, coz it required fourteen stitches."

"Will that heal?"

"To an extent, yeah, but I don't think the mark will fade away soon," she said dressing the wound with a clean bandage.

"You have only half an hour left to see him," she said breaking the silence again as she went out pushing the trolley out of the room.

I kept his books in the drawer of the corner kept beside his bed and thought of going back home. I wanted to inform him where I had kept the books but he was unconscious under the effect of sedative. I saw his phone kept on the corner and I immediately messaged him the location of his books so that he can find them whenever he wakes up after looking at the text.

When I was about to turn away, his phone beeped and pulled my eyes towards it, which immediately recognized the wallpaper they had seen a long time ago.

I slowly walked towards the phone fearing what will happen to me when I will see the name Jacob had written together with his name, but there was this curiosity and faint hope building inside of me which asked me to check it once. I picked up the phone and saw the same words 'Jacob and' and below it the phone was showing my name indicating that he had a message from me.

My thumb was shaking as it moved towards the 'Ignore' button so that the whole wallpaper will be seen clearly. Before I pushed the button, I was already in tears, the dreading pain of seeing my love's name with someone else's was more than what I could take. The screen appeared, but the tears blurred my vision, I wiped them off and was stunned to see 'Amelia' carved on the bark of the tree with his name, of which he had clicked the picture. I wiped my eyes again so as to confirm what I was seeing was right or not.

But it was there 'Jacob and Amelia' carved on the tree that was set as the wallpaper of his phone. A new wave of happy tears burst through my eyes as the reality sunk in. My love actually loves me?

"What are you doing here?" The phone slipped from my hands and fell on the floor as I realized someone else was present in the room.

I turned around and saw the person I least expected to ruin my reality at this moment, "Harriet?"
