Chapter 15 - My Injured Savior
I woke up with severe headache. The blinding light in my room irritated me more. It took me sometime to open my eyes and get accustomed to the bright light. I tried to sit up and found someone's head resting on the side of my bed.
Rick was sleeping beside my bed, sitting on the cold floor with his back supported by the corner kept by the side of my bed. His face looked creased with worry.
"Rick, wake up bro." I said shaking his shoulder slightly.
"Hmmm?" He raised his head from the bed to look at me and then looked at his wrist watch.
"I should make lunch for you now." He said standing up sleepily.
"Is it that late?"
"Hmm it's one by my watch. Are you okay now?"
"Hmmm, just a slight headache is troubling me." I said. "I will be okay in some time." I said quickly as I saw that worried look returning to his face.
"Can you give your statement to the cops today about what happened yesterday?"
"Hmmm, but I don't remember much." I said knitting my eye-brows and straining my already paining head to remember it.
"Hmm, but some guys saw what was happening there and saved you, maybe you will be able to recall what happened after listening to their statement?"
"I will try but I am not so sure. Do I have to give the statement today?"
"I wish I could do something to avoid this today sis, but they have arrested two guys and they need your statement to do all the other necessary investigations."
"When do we have to go?"
"In an hour Amy, I will prepare lunch for you, you go and freshen up."
"If you are not so hungry then I will suggest we can eat outside after giving the statement. I don't think I will be able to keep anything down right now."
"Okay. I will go and freshen up too then, see you later." Rick said closing the door behind him as he went out.
I stood up with some effort. The muscles of my body were unusually stiff and protested against the change in my body posture. My head hurt and it felt as if someone was banging it with a hammer. I remembered the painkiller kept in the mirror cabinet in my bathroom and started walking towards it with the glass of water kept on the corner. I kept my eyes closed most of the time as it helped relieve some of the headache. I blindingly searched for the handle of the cabinet and opened it; with one eye open I searched for the painkiller and closed my eye simultaneously as I closed the cabinet. I took one tablet out from the bottle and kept it in my mouth, swallowing it down with the water.
The water in my throat hurt like hell, as if someone pushed a long knife deep down my throat, its sharp edges cutting the walls as it moved downwards. I opened my eyes, my right hand encircling my neck. Tears rolled down my eyes when I saw bite mark on the right cheek of my reflected image. The mark was deep and the area surrounding it was purple, three teeth marks could be observed after having a closer look.
"Are you sure you don't need a quick-lunch Amy before going for the meeting?" Rick's question followed after a brief knock at my door.
I quickly tried to calm myself, gulping and trying to hold back the hiccups.
"Amy you're there?"
"No Rick, I really don't feel like eating right now". I looked at my image after saying this and saw fresh tears forming in my eyes.
"Okay, we will meet in the living room then, in half an hour." I heard his soft footsteps on the carpet outside my room.
I breathed a sigh of relief. I don't want to give my brother more trouble. He is already behaving like a matured adult in the absence of mom and dad. I love my brother for his caring nature.
It took me 15 minutes to calm myself and search for the right thing to wear and then another 15 minutes to get ready. I avoided the mirror most of the time but after sometime I had to look at it to lighten the purple mark with some makeup, but then I too just focused at the mark and never saw how my whole face looked with it.

"Please sir, I would like you to wait here for few minutes, your case in-charge Mr. Samuels will be here in a short time." The man who showed us to Mr. Samuel's cabin said to Rick and departed.
"Are you alright sis?" Rick asked when he noticed me staring continuously at the floor.
"Hmmm, just trying to remember what happened after Brian and I had dinner yesternight. Did Brian tell you anything?"
"Hmm, he told me that you both went for the dance floor, when he told you that he is going to get a drink and will be back in a minute. But when he came back you weren't there, so he thought you must have gone to the restroom but when you didn't return after 15 minutes he went to look for you. Hearing a fight, he returned and found you lying at the floor while some guys were fighting with each other. Soon the cops came and one of the guy was severely injured and was taken to the hospital, and from the people there he found out that some guys were trying to corner you, when the other guys saw that happening and saved you. Then Brian brought you home after giving his statement to the cops, and after the paramedics took your blood sample and detected a low dose of a drug"
"A drug?"
"Hmm, I think the results must have come by now about it."
"I still don't remember anything after the moment when I was sitting there with Brian and having dinner."
"I think it's the impact of GHB." Said a man with well-built body as he entered the cabin.
"Hello, I am Max Samuels, and I have been assigned as the in-charge of your case."
"GHB?" Rick asked.
"Gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid, commonly known as GHB or Date Rape Drug."
"A what?" I said as I found my voice.
"The drug was found in your blood sample we took last night."
"But I didn't take any drug." I protested.
"I know Ms. Wilson, it was given to you in your drink. This is known as Drink Spiking."
"But I took only one drink and I didn't suspect any difference in its taste."
"Most of the time victims are not aware that they ingested a drug at all, GHB is invisible when dissolved in water and is odorless. It is somewhat salty in taste but is indiscernible when dissolved in beverages."
"But who must have mixed it in her drink at that place?" Asked Rick.
"That's why we are searching for the waiter who provided her that drink at dinner."
"Isn't he there at the belle?"
"No, he has run away and as it was the first day of belle, nobody was that much familiar with him and nobody knew where he lived. Even the men we have taken in our custody are saying they don't know anything about him. But our team is still searching for him and hopefully we will be able to get hold of him."
"Hmmm."
"Ms. Wilson as I heard you aren't able to remember anything past the dinner." Mr. Samuels asked addressing me.
"No Mr. Samuels."
"Will it help if you saw the two men we have arrested?"
"I hope so."
"Well right now we can't show them to you in person, but we have their photograph." He said opening an orange envelope, taking out two photographs from it and placing them in front of me.
That unexplained fear returned again when I looked at those blue eyes staring at me from the photograph, the scene of him coming closer to me, kissing the tear at my cheek and then the memory of blood at his lips chilled my spine. The bite-mark at my cheek started hurting. A horrified look must have crossed my face coz Rick hugged me sideways immediately and Mr. Samuels stood up and offered me his glass of water.
"No thank you, but the water hurts my throat" I said after calming down.
"I can understand, it's another effect of that drug." He said as he reoccupied his seat.
I built up the courage and looked at the other photograph. I wasn't sure about this man coz I just saw the side face of the other man who blocked everyone from seeing us.
"I am not sure about this guy, but he looks like the other person." I said giving Mr. Samuels the photograph.
"Hmm, I see, well thanks for your co-operation Ms. Wilson. We are all thankful for the group of brave guys who spotted what was happening and came for your rescue. They are so young but still had the courage to stop what all was happening. One of them is severely injured, but out of danger now, but will be staying in the hospital for some time. You should go and thank him for his bravery. He is at St. Louisiana hospital I think."
"Yes we will surely go to meet this young savior. What's his name by the way?" Asked Rick.
Mr. Samuels checked the records of the case and spoke the words which almost shook the ground beneath me, "Jacob Hawkins."
