Sump Pump Problems
If the sump pump suddenly stops running or makes a lot of noise while running, it means the machine is having some problem. You will have to diagnose the problem, and initiate its repair before the condition of the device worsens and leaves the pump useless. The pump may refuse to start in case of switch problem. Sump pump operation depends on the switch as well as the float arm mechanism. If the position of the device in the basin is altered, it may lead to float problem in the sump pump, thus leaving the machine ineffective. Worn out valve can also cause the sump pump to stop working or make a lot of noise. Other common sump pump problems include debris in the sump pit and faulty installation.

If the problems are minor, you can initiate the repair work on your own. Float is indeed an important component in sump pump operation. It controls the on/off switch in the machine. The float may become ineffective if it is clogged by debris, in such a case, removing the debris can help you to solve the problem. If the machine is making a loud noise, the problem may be with the impeller. You will have to remove the impeller, clean it of all the debris and other particles, and replace it. Ideally, you can plant a filter in the sump pump to ensure that impeller clogging problem is not repeated. If the sump pump stops working suddenly, it may be a result of wiring problems. In this case, first you will have to make sure that you detach the pump from its power source. Then check whether all the wires are in place. After fixing loose connections, if any, the machine can be reinstalled. In some cases, the problem may be much more serious than you imagine. In such cases it may require a person with professional expertise to solve the same. It is difficult to estimate how much you would have to spend, considering that the problems associated with sump pumps are too many, each differing with the model and type. If the problem is minor, such as a worn out part or clogged debris, it can be handled by you on your own, which will make it considerably less expensive.
Though solutions to sump pump problems do exist, it is better to prevent these problems in the first place. This can be easily done by ensuring proper maintenance.
