• Make an outline for your sump pump basin on your basement floor. Turn over the basin upside down. Take the basin as a center and draw a square around it. The size of the square should be approximately 6 to 10 inches more than the top of the basin. When you begin making a hole in the basement floor, make sure you are 10 feet away from any of the walls. It is always advised to make a hole in a floor 10 feet away from walls surrounding it for safety reasons.
• Begin boring your hole. With the help of a jackhammer, cut the lines you have made. Make sure you don't make the hole too large. Once you have the perimeter cut, begin breaking away in smaller bits until you have reached the concrete. Remove all the rubble so only dirt remains.
• Make a hole for the basin. Use a shovel to make a hole for your basin. Make your hole a little deep so that the basin fits in it. Leave a 1 inch gap between the basin and the hole so that the basin does not get flushed with dirt.
• Fill the area around the basin with gravel, until it reaches the top of the hole. The basin and the hole should be in level.
• With the help of a trowel smoothen the gravel area. Cover and smoothen the gravel area and remove the dirt around the basin.
• Remove chunks of rocks and roots as they can cause problems if stuck with the gravels. The upper part of the basin should be 1 inch higher than the basement floor.
• Make use of concrete over the smoothened dirt area. Spread the concrete evenly so that the basin and the basement floor are level. Make sure the floor is completely dry before installing the sump pump.

Solid sump pump covers are used to drain water with the help of a pipe. Perforated covers are used where water flows over the floor and then goes in to the well.
