Water clogging, especially in the basement, is a common problem in many households. It can be quite annoying to notice water accumulated in a particular place without any outlet. A sump pit is a man-made opening in the ground which collects and drains water and other fluids spilled on the ground, so that it does not cause dampness. • Once you have decided the location of the sump pit in the basement, measure the area and dig the area up to 35 inches deep. If you have a concrete flooring, then use a jack hammer to break the concrete.
• The next step may involve the construction of a wooden frame for the pit. Choose a sturdy wood for the frame so that the cement for the sump pump basin will be help steady till it dries.
• Mix the concrete for the pit thoroughly and pour it into the wooden framework and smoothen it. Wait for 1 or 2 days for the concrete to dry completely before removing the wooden frame.
• Once the sump pit has been constructed, you need to make the liner. This liner functions as a filter preventing debris from entering into the pump and blocking it, while effectively flushing out the water. You can make the liner out of concrete, which can last for a long time. The depth of the liner may depend on the volume of water and the sump pump drainage ability.
• You need to fit a cover so that unintentional trips and falls may be averted. Choose a heavy metal grill or grate according to the size of the pit. This will also ensure the smooth seepage of water.
• Due to the dampness, algae and other microbes may grow in the pump, or small debris may clog the liner, hampering its function. Hence a periodic cleaning is required. Before cleaning, make sure the power source is disconnected. Wear safety gear and remove the debris and clean the float. Once you are done with the task, close the pit and reconnect the power supply.

Routine and proper maintenance of the sump pump and pit should be carried out to ensure the proper functioning of the pit and pump. Though installation of the sump pit and pump can be a bit time-consuming, this effective drainage solution is a value addition to every household.
