Common Causes of Hair Loss in Women

There could be a wide range of reasons that could lead to sudden hair loss in women. What are these reasons and causes that can lead to hair loss? Let's study these in more detail.

Trauma and Stress
Trauma and stress is known to be the root cause of several conditions in the human body, one of which is hair loss. When a person is stressed or there are traumatic experiences that make way, the body releases certain chemicals that hamper the normal functioning of the body and lead to hair loss. Medically, this term is known as Telogen effluvium and is characterized by the high rate of hair shedding that takes place. Hair continues to fall at an alarming rate and can even lead to bald spots in women. Traumas like death, childbirth or stress due to work or otherwise is something that needs to be looked into.

Dietary Deficiencies
A diet that is not balanced and does not provide for all the nutrients in the body leads to deficiencies and can cause hair loss. Hair is made up of a protein called keratin and thus when the body does not get a supply of this protein, it leads to hair loss. Other nutrients like vitamin A is also seen to be one of the main causes of hair loss in women.

Hormonal Imbalance
Testosterone is the main hormone that is responsible for producing hair in the body. When there is a hormonal imbalance in the body, it affects the production of testosterone and thereby leads to hair loss in women.

Diseases and Infections
There are several diseases and infections that can lead to sudden hair loss in young women. Here are some of them:
  • Alopecia Areata ~ Certain hair follicles get infected in this autoimmune disease. The immune system starts defending the body by attacking these follicles and thus there is abnormal and full blown hair loss. A more severe form of this condition is alopecia totalis in which there is complete hair loss.
  • Ringworm ~ When there is a ringworm infection that affects the scalp, it can result in hair loss.
  • Fungal Infection ~ Certain fungal infections like Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) can lead to hair loss as well.
Other
Reasons for hair loss at young age might include tying the hair very tightly which can cause for the hair being pulled and therefore leading to hair loss.

Treatment for Hair Loss in Women

The female hair loss remedies will be determined according to the condition that is causing the sudden hair loss in young women. If it's a nutrient deficiency, then eating the right kind of food will lead to the hair growing back normally. Similarly, the reasons for women going into trauma or stress, if learned and solved can lead to normalizing of the situation. Hair massages are also known to help in improving the circulation of blood and lead to hair growth. Other than that, several creams and medication (taken in consultation with a dermatologist) for the treatment of infections and diseases can be undertaken. Hair weaving and hair transplanting are also being looked into as very effective methods of treating hair loss.

Hair loss can cause for added trauma and stress as well, as you may have probably experienced at some time or the other. But more than that, it needs to be looked into 'coz it could be the result of an underlying disease, that if not cured could lead to more complications.
