Stress Relief Activities

The effect that stress has on our body can manifest in a number of different forms such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, ulcers, etc. As most of us deal with stress in our daily life, it is vital to incorporate some stress relief activities into one's schedule.
We know that stress can cause some serious harm to our bodies, but sometimes there is no getting away from it. The next best thing to do is acknowledge that you are stressed and then find positive ways to channel it. The best ways to release stress is through activities you enjoy. By releasing the stress, we can reduce some of the negative effects of stress on the body. Here are some fun stress relief activities that you could try.

Activities for Stress Relief

Sports/Exercise
The reason sports or exercise are at the top of my list is because they are the best way to release stress pent up over the day. You could play basketball, tennis, baseball or any other sport of your choice. If you don't like to play sports, even jogging would serve the purpose. Alternatively, you could work out at a gym. If you want to take up most adventurous activities you could try hiking, rock climbing (or climbing a wall), mountain biking and rappelling. The best part about activities like hiking is that it will get you away from the city into the outdoors, thus taking you away from all that you associate with stress. Yoga is a form of exercise that helps you deal with stress before it happens. It calms you and helps you get centered. It usually incorporates breathing techniques and meditation, that are effective techniques of dealing with stress.

Massage
Getting a massage is another way to deal with stress. It loosens up the muscles, and one can feel the stress slowly ebb out of them. If accompanied by tranquil music and dim lighting, it can be a very relaxing experience.

Socializing
Most people will agree that socializing is one of the best activities for stress relief. It works in two ways: First, it is a distraction and draws you away from your problems, as you spend time talking and interacting with others. Second, for a lot of people talking about their problems helps them release significant amount of stress. Pouring your heart out to friends will not only make you feel better, it will also help you gain a better understanding of your problems.

Reading
Reading is a very popular activity the world over, and is a great distraction. Most people can immerse themselves in a good book, leaving the world behind. You can pick a book for light or heavy reading according to your frame of mind, and spend only the amount of time you have to spare.

Music
Listening to music is a great way to take your mind off anything that may be bothering you. Music is known to be a great mood enhancer, and can thus calm you down or perk you up. While the marvelous effects of music are still being discovered, its healing powers are already being harnessed though music therapy.

Sex
Sex is also known to be a great tension reliever. It can thus also work as a stress relief technique, an idea which is backed by studies showing that sex and physical intimacy make men and women feel less stressed and in better spirits. As it involves physical activity, it causes the release of endorphins and other feel-good hormones.

If you want to try group stress relief activities, you could join a dance class, a book club or a laughter club! Gardening, which allows you to get in touch with nature, is an activity that many turn to for stress relief. An instant stress reliever is deep breathing, and can be done anywhere. While these are just a few stress relief activities, any activity that you enjoy will work as a stress reliever for you.
