Stress Free Bedroom - 10 Simple Steps
The bedroom should be a calm and peaceful escape from the pressures and bustle of the everyday world. Very often, though, life’s stresses find their way into the very places where we are supposed to be relaxed. Intrusions such as this contribute to insomnia, which in turn can lead to major health problems. Fortunately, with just a few simple changes you can remove those distractions from your bedroom, creating a better sleep environment. Get rid of those late-night problems by remaking your bedroom into a safe, peaceful place to relax and sleep. You can begin by following these 10 simple steps:

1. Get the television out of the bedroom. Remove the television from your bedroom. Place it instead in an entertainment center in the family room or living room. Watching TV in your bed can prevent a good night’s sleep.

2. Next, move your computer. As with the television, find the computer a new home. Create a space in your home office, or at least place it in its own corner of the family room or den. Now you’ve removed all work-related stress and worry from the space where you should be relaxing and sleeping.

3. It’s important to choose the right colors. According to color theory, different shades have different effects on people. Cool colors, which can be found on the left side of the color wheel, afford a sense of calm. Select one of these colors for the bedroom, avoiding bright, loud colors that excite the senses more than they soothe them.

4. Another important step is to eliminate any excess noise. Be sure that stereos, televisions and other noisy electronics aren’t in any adjacent rooms. Often there aren’t soundproof walls in modern homes, and the noise that comes through can keep you awake at night.

5. Don’t forget to block the light. Window treatments that block the light can be easily found. Even when the sun isn’t out, there is still plenty of outside light that can find its way into the bedroom, upsetting your sleep patterns. Keep your room as dark as possible, especially those of you whose work schedule necessitates sleeping during the day.

6. Another great idea is to add a little light. For those of you who need a little light to sleep comfortably, it’s a good idea to add a few nightlights or a dimmer switch to the room, rather than sleeping with a bright lamp on.

7. Another thing to remember is to check your pipes. Loud pipes can keep everyone in the house awake when someone visits the bathroom in the middle of the night. See if you can find the cause of any clanging and banging, especially if your bathroom is adjacent to your bedroom.

8. Don’t forget to seal your windows and doors. Check to be sure all your doors and windows are solid and secure, with no drafts or rattles.

9. It’s also important to clean the air. Using an air purifier or humidifier will keep the air quality at its best. Your sleep can easily be interrupted by allergens and excessively dry air. These things are also very unpleasant to wake up to. Conveniently, many of these machines also create white noise, which will drown out any other distracting sounds.

10. Finally, get organized. Sort through your closets and find homes for your clothing and other personal items. When a room is chaotic and messy, that becomes stressful to the mind. It’s silly to try to fall asleep with your eyes darting all around the room, finding shoes and clothes that are scattered everywhere. You can sleep better knowing that everything is in its place.
