Stores Give Out a Gift Card to Boost Sales

Gift cards are being given away by many retailers in and effort to bring people in and boost sales. If done properly it can also increase a store's brand and make customers more loyal.
Consumer confidence may be down and sales for most stores are not what they once were but the holiday shopping season is just about upon us. Retailers are pulling out all of the stops in order to bring customers in. One promotional tool that companies are turning to is the ever popular gift card.

Normally people buy gift cards for those on their shopping list that may be hard to buy for or as just a more convenient way of gift giving. Retailers, however, are using them in a more creative way to differentiate themselves form other similar stores by simply giving them away. Some as part of an added bonus to shoppers who spend a certain amount of money in store while other retailers are choosing to give them out with no strings attached but this freebie is usually only the realm of higher end stores and may only be given to repeat customers.

In the case of high-end retailers combining their promotion with custom gift card packaging brings an added touch to the campaign. It also reinforces the brand image and adds elegance to the gift card program.

Whichever method is implemented the end goal is the same. Bring in the shoppers and get them to spend money. Normally a store would choose to offer discounts on certain items. This may be a good incentive for customers but offering gift cards is a way to stand out in a crowded retail industry. A gift card also gives the customer the impression that everything in the store is discounted.

Studies have shown that the majority of people spend more than what the card is worth. This means that a shopper may put it towards the purchase of a bigger ticket item that they may not have purchased without the card. Depending on how much the gift card’s value is it may be more advantageous for a store to issue the cards rather than try to discount many of products that they carry.

Gifts cards are much more than an item of convenience for the consumer. They have become in integral part of promotional and marketing campaigns for many stores and businesses that can help to create brand loyalty and give a much needed boost in sales.
