Stomach pain after eating is a common problem experienced by most people. This can be caused due to various reasons and simple precautions can help you avoid common stomach problems after eating. Read on to know more on stomach ache after eating.
Causes of Stomach Problems After Eating
Intense lower right side abdominal pain after eating can be caused due to appendicitis. This might be followed by nausea, vomiting or mild fever. You must visit a doctor if you experience these stomach problems after eating. Gallstones are another possible cause of upper right abdominal pain after eating, which further spreads to the right upper back, right shoulder or chest.
Severe upper abdominal pain after eating a heavy meal or pain, six to twelve hours after a heavy meal, can be caused due to pancreatitis. This pain often starts in the upper abdomen and spreads to the sides and back. It might be followed by nausea, a racing heartbeat or fever. Extreme sharp abdominal pain after eating is a common symptom of problems like pelvic inflammatory disease, heart attack, perforated stomach ulcer, food poisoning or diabetes.
You might experience moderate cramps and stomach ache after eating. These might be followed by vomiting that smells like stools. Stomach cramps after eating are caused due to intestinal obstruction. Other symptoms of intestinal obstruction include watery stools or no stools at all. Stomach pain after eating accompanied by severe stomach cramps and tenderness in the lower left side of the abdomen are symptoms of diverticulitis.
Stomach pain and bloating after eating dairy products is caused due to lactose intolerance. Stomach ache after eating along with bloating, less than three bowel movements in a week and hard stools are symptoms of constipation. If your diet doesn't include enough fiber and you don't consume the required amount of water throughout the day, it might lead to constipation and stomach pain after eating. Feeling tired after eating, along with bloating and pain in the lower abdomen is caused due to irritable bowel syndrome or dysentery. Fatigue after eating is caused due to overeating and consuming food too fast. This also leads to stomach flu.
Stomach problems after eating can be caused if you consume any type of liquid in abundance right after eating food. Drinking water, fresh fruit juices, soft drinks or any other drinks immediately after eating, dilutes the stomach acids. A proper concentration of stomach acid helps kill any unhealthy bacteria and fungi in the food and keeps the digestive system healthy. As the stomach acid is diluted, the food is not broken down and hence, it is not digested easily. Also, the harmful bacteria survive and the body tries to eject the food causing the stomach upset. This might also lead to diarrhea after eating.
Infection due to bacteria or viruses might be a cause of stomach pain after eating. When bacteria or viruses enter your body, the body reacts to this and tries to get rid of the infection through diarrhea or vomiting. Nausea after eating is very common in this case. Problems like food poisoning, pneumonia and urinary tract infections are caused due to bacterial infections.
Stomach ache after eating is the most common symptom of gastritis, diverticulitis and heartburn. As mentioned before, abdominal pain after eating can be a symptom of various problems. You can try some stomach ache home remedies and wait for 1-2 days. Eating asafetida will help relieve stomach ache immediately. Eat it after roasting it over a low flame and mixing it with some yogurt. You can also eat fennel seeds to relieve a stomach ache. If the pain doesn't subside, you would need to immediately visit a doctor.
Stomach pain after eating is mostly due to overeating, so try and curb overeating. Also, if you keep your stomach empty for a long time and then eat a large quantity of food, it might cause stomach pain. So meal planning is important and also ensure that you strictly follow the diet and timings. Keep yourself hydrated throughout the day, but avoid drinking water for an hour after having your meals. Follow a balanced diet and avoid eating junk food. Walking exercises are the best thing to do after a meal to ensure the proper digestion of food.
