Steroid Cream

Steroids are hormones which perform various functions in the body. Corticosteroids are a type of steroids which have immense anti-inflammatory properties. Corticosteroids are used in the treatment of various skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, skin rash etc. They can be taken orally, injected or applied topically. Topical steroid cream is convenient to use and often fast acting. However, corticosteroids must not be confused with anabolic steroids, which improve muscle mass and enhance physical performance.

Topical Steroid Cream
Topical cream is to be directly applied on the affected skin. It has several advantages over its oral counterpart. As oral steroid works its way through the body, it is often slow acting. On the other hand, topical steroid gets directly absorbed in the skin, thereby acting fast. Cortisone creams contain carrier oils, which improve the assimilation of steroid in skin. Steroid cream reduces inflammation and soothes other symptoms like itching, stinging etc. This cream is considered very effective against serious skin disorders like eczema, psoriasis. Although, it does not cure the cause of eczema in the real sense, it certainly relieves the symptoms. As the person does not experience itching, he is less likely to scratch it, which eventually prevents any further infection. If the skin is already infected, steroids with antibiotic or antiseptic properties can be used.

Potency

The potency of steroid skin creams is determined by the steroid ingredient used as well as the concentration of carrier oils. Topical steroids are classified into 7 groups according to their potency. Group I includes steroids with maximum potency while those placed in Group VII are least potent. While introducing you to steroid treatment, your doctor will often prescribe you steroid creams of the lowest strength and see how they work for you. The concentration can be gradually increased if the low potency cream turns out to be ineffective. Most new patients of eczema are first prescribed hydrocortisone (1%) as a preliminary treatment option. One must not use a prescription strength or OTC cream for more than a week unless recommended by the doctor. If the cream does not show any improvement or worse, deteriorates the condition of the skin, an alternative treatment course needs to be suggested. Thus, if the steroid cream does not work for you, you probably need greater strength of steroid or an altogether different treatment option.

Side Effects

Excessive and prolonged use of steroid cream is not recommended for several reasons. Creams of higher potency are often prescribed only for a short duration such as a week or two. They are only used to minimize occasional flare ups. Milder creams can be used longer than that. However, there is still a risk of developing some side effects. Skin thinning, skin discoloration, stretch marks are some possible side effects of steroid creams. If you notice any of these side effects or find your problem going from bad to worse, then you should consult a dermatologist without a delay. Excessive use of steroid cream is also linked with cancer. Hence, it is a must that one should use these creams judiciously.

Steroid cream is indeed very effective in controlling skin ailments. However, before using it for rashes or any other skin disorder, it is a must that you consult your dermatologist. You may have to do a patch test to determine if steroid treatment suits your skin or not. This further minimizes the risk of developing any possible side effects.
