Steps to starting a new business

So many of us dream of the freedom of working for ourselves. Do not be fooled though. Working for yourself is harder than working for an employer. The rewards are that you build a future doing something you love.

Get Organized

Make sure you set up a work routine and stick to it. Get a diary and write your ‘to do list’ in it, list appointments and anything else you want to remind yourself about. And check it regularly.

How to Choose the Right Business

Chances are you already have a good idea of what you want to do. Whatever you decide make sure it is something you will love doing and are committed to.

Research

Research the feasibility of your idea. Use the internet, the local library and bookshops for information about starting out.

What Legal Model will Your Business Use?

There are many forms of trading and most people take on sole ownership. Other options are trading in partnership or as a corporation. Do your research to find out which one suits your plans.

Business Planning

Put your plan in writing. This needs to include:

- Your product and where it fits into the market
- How much money you need to start your business
- Your target audience
- Business projections
- Marketing strategies

What to Call Yourself

If you are not going to trade under your own name you need a name and register it with your local authority.

Your name is important as it is the first phase of branding your new venture. But how to go about it? This is something personal but some things to consider are:

- Your product or service
- Your vision
- How you want to be perceived
- Make it short, sharp, descriptive and to the point

When you come up with something, test it on friends, family, and even strangers. Get their feedback. Does it represent you and your concept?

Finally, ask yourself, can you live with this name forever.

Business Branding

Think about how you want people to see you and your product. Pick a theme or identity that reflects your business; product; or service. Start branding your idea. Bring it alive to symbolize your vision.

Get your stationary, business cards and website designed. Open a bank account and organize a business postal address.

Remember, making dreams come true is a wonderful feeling. If you put in the hard work, you can make a success of starting a small business from scratch.
