Step aerobics are a quite simple to perform exercise, which don't require any expensive fitness equipment. All one needs is a step platform. You can also use dumbbells to make your workout more intensive. There are two ways to perform step aerobics workout, either by joining step aerobics classes or following home videos, because an instructor is necessary when it comes to step aerobics, as the exercises keep changing according to instructions. No matter which way you choose, the most basic moves of step aerobics workout routines are the same. You can follow the mentioned below steps to perform these aerobic exercises, however, it is advised to join classes if you are a complete beginner to step aerobics.

Step Aerobics Exercises

Before you start your step aerobics workout, make sure you do a warm up of 7-10 minutes. The warm up can be mild jogging. Warm up is important, so don't skip it even if the class has already started.

A-step: This step aerobics move is done in 4 counts, and forms the letter A; the platform is maintained sideways for this exercise. To perform this exercise step on the center of the platform with your left foot, then bring the other foot on top of the platform, so that both feet are together on the platform. Then step down with other foot on the other side of the platform with the lead foot, and bring the other foot down near the lead foot.

Basic Left Stepping: This is a very basic step aerobics choreography workout that is done by facing the horizontal platform side. First step on the platform with your left foot, then step on the platform with your right foot. Then step back down with your left foot, and then with your right foot. Similar to left stepping, you can also do right foot stepping.

Across the Top: Perform this exercise, while facing the platform sideways. First step sideways up on the platform using your lead foot, then step up so that both feet are on the platform. Step your other foot on the floor, then step your lead foot on the floor beside your other foot.

Grapevine: These step aerobics routines can be done without using a platform. For this workout, step to the side with your lead foot, then bring your other foot slightly behind and past your lead foot. Then step with your lead foot to the side, and bring the other foot next to your lead foot.

Charleston Exercise: This stepping workout can be done with or without a platform. First step forward with your lead foot, then step forward with your other foot and you can either raise your knee, kick or just tap. Then bring the other foot backwards, and while stepping your lead foot backwards lunge.

Turnstep Exercise: Perform this exercise while facing the step platform sideways. Now, step on the platform with your lead foot, by keeping your lead foot perpendicular to the horizontal length of the platform. Then bring the other foot on the platform at the other side of the platform. Then step down with your lead food on the other side of the platform, and step down with your other foot.

Step aerobics help greatly to tone the lower body, if you wish to work on your upper body as well, then consider adding light weights to your stepping routines, that will help to tone your arm and shoulder muscles greatly. As you gather stamina and speed, make your exercises faster to get better results, and increase the height of the step platform to increase your endurance.
