I am sure you are thinking how to start a fish tank? The following pointers will help you in starting a fish tank.

Guidelines for Setting up a Fish Tank
Before starting a fish tank, the location of the fish tank should be predetermined. While doing so, choose a place that is neither too hot nor too cold. Outside temperatures easily affect the temperature of the water in the tank. Keep the tank away from noise as fishes get disturbed and stressed. Light, artificial as well as sunlight, plays an important role in keeping the fishes healthy. Strong light causes a lot of discomfort to your fishes. Decide upon the type of fishes you want, educate yourself on their care and requirements, food and habitat needs.

How to Start a Fish Tank
Fish tanks or aquariums come in acrylic or glass material. Some of these tanks have a tint of color also. Decide upon the material, size and shape as per your needs. Place the tank in the location you have decided and then start working on it. Wipe the insides with a clean cloth and warm water. It is important to sanitize the tank before filling it up, as it would help get rid of all germs. Sanitizing does not mean detergents or soaps, just clean cloth and warm water will do.

Get all your decorative substances and objects for the tank in order. Most places that supply fishes also supply aquarium material too. Add a substrate like sand or gravel at the bottom. The gravel or the sand should be clean. One can wash the substrate under running water, pat it dry and put in the fish tank.

Now it is time to add all the ornamentation to increase the beauty of your fish aquarium. There are plenty of options available that one can choose from, like, natural stones, shells, colored pebbles, small statues, tree roots and plants. Make sure you wash all of these things with warm water except the plant and roots. Avoid picking up stones and pebbles directly from the garden. Because if they are not cleaned well, they will end up contaminating the tank. A mix of artificial and natural plants are recommended; artificial plants will not get damaged, and if one chooses some bright vivid color, it will add to the beauty of the tank, while natural plants will ensure a normal pH balance in the aquarium by absorbing excess nitrates.

A few electrical equipments should also be added. Make sure you buy these equipments from good reputed companies, you don't want to electrocute your fishes! A thermometer will allow you to keep a constant check on the temperature of the water. A small water heater will keep the temperature of the water consistent and right for your fishes. An air pump and check valve will aerate the water and ensure a good circulation of oxygen in the water. Lastly, the aquarium should be well lighted. By well lighted, I mean the fish aquarium should have a focal light that will enhance the vibrant color of the fishes as well as the entire fish tank.

Now it is time to add water, fill up the tank slowly with a small jug. Don't splash the water. Switch on the electrical equipment, add some water treatment in the water. Water treatment includes healthy bacteria. Give the bacteria and the natural plants a couple of days to settle in, and then introduce your fishes. Check with a local store or on the Internet about the types of aquarium fishes. Read more on How to Set Up a Fish Tank
