-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-
*** I paced back and forth across the room idly, running a hand through my hair. I glanced to the set up stage, then back at the floor. They didn't know I was here, and I wanted it to stay that way until after their performance. The singer had to be here, they couldn't perform without her. And, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't getting any 'special' performance of their music. I wanted to hear the real thing. Live.
I finally gave up, dropping down into the nearest chair. I stared at my watch. Only twenty minutes more. Why was I so eager to see them? Who knows. Maybe Haven Anderson finally found a band he really liked.
I laughed aloud, it wasn't impossible. But, truth was, I just wanted to see the lead vocalist, for whatever reason. It wasn't like I was desperate and searching high and low for a lover, there was just something compelling me to stay as I impatiently rubbed my thumb across the glass in front of me. Something just drove me mad about waiting on her.
After ten minutes of stacking butter packets, I deemed myself truly and utterly bored. I stood abruptly, somehow managing not to pull attention. I quickly grabbed my hat, pulling it down to my eyes as I seated myself again. Now, I tapped my fingers along the edge of the sleek, black table. I was beginning to wonder if time would ever go pass.
But, as I stared at the empty stage, time seemed to finally crawl along, and now I was looking at the manager of the café, announcing Black Rose to the world proudly. First came the drummer, then the basest, and then the guitarist, but still, no singer. Tapping their feet, they began to play. Alone. I closed my eyes, inhaling sharply. No reason to be angry, there was no guarantee that she would have been here.
I shoved my chair back, no longer caring about the sound it made, standing. I turned to grab my jacket, huffing and puffing. As it spread out across the air, making its way to my ears, I froze. I must've looked like a deer in headlights, stopped in mid-action, mouth agape.
Her voice was sweet, dripping with honey, yet strong and firm, coming out loud and clear over the other music. I slowly turned, my eyes settling on her face. As soon as they did, I felt as if a tub of cold water had just been poured over my head, then as if someone had slapped me around a little after that. I was beyond shocked.
I trembled, dropping my jacket to the floor. Without my knowing, my feet began to drag me forward, through the crowd, until I was looking up at her beautiful face. Everything came rushing back to me, it was no longer just a distant daydream. It was a reality.
Everything that had been so well taken from me had just been returned, thrown right in my face, and it hurt. I wasn't on the stage, looking down at her. Now, I was in the audience, looking up at her. I reached out, as if it would make her come to me, but she only walked the other way, eyes closed, words spilling out of her mouth.
I turned swiftly, yanking my hand down. Covering my face, I practically ran back to my table. That certainly turned out to be a mistake. Her eyes, now open, landed right on me. They widened, then she fell silently, her mouth still hanging open, as she stood completely still, her chest moving up and down as she struggled to catch her breath.
She finally blinked, all music stopped. "Haven," She whispered, stepping backwards. Her whisper was amplified by the microphone in her hand, and everyone turned to me as I slowly pulled my hat off.
I cleared my throat awkwardly, "Erm. Yep. That would be me,"
She inhaled quickly, "Why are you here?" She demanded, glaring at me.
"I... Came to see the show?" I tried, stepping forward, tugging at my jacket nervously. The crowd separated, still very confused.
"Wait, you two know each other?" It was her guitarist, Adrian, I think.
She didn't even glance back at him, "Briefly."
"Still giving me the short answers, Gabby?" I smirked at her, proud that I had a name for her.
She huffed, rolling her eyes, "It's Gypsy."
"Guess so," I countered quickly, climbing onto the stage. I walked over to her, lifting a hand.
*** He wasn't even an inch away from me, raising his hand. I kept my glare on him, hoping he knew I wasn't very happy with him. He pushed my hair back from my face, his touch burning my skin. I struggled to control my breathing as he leaned down, placing his lips next to my ear.
"I didn't forget," He whispered, his breath warm and soothing. I pulled away, regardless.
"Don't give me that, you left, you let down a lot of people," I turned, grabbing the microphone stand.
"Including you?" He asked, his voice mocking me.
"No," I answered carefully, "No including me. I was even happier after you left. In fact, it all because of you that I and Nate are so close," I shoved my hair back behind my ear.
"Uhm, Gypsy? You hardly even touch him..." Leah. Always had to stand up for the truth. I loved that about her until now. As he laughed, I burned bright red, giving her a very stern look. She smiled sheepishly.
"See?" Haven grinned.
"No. I don't see," I walked off the stage, into the back room. He followed.
"Why are you so angry, then?" He stopped, his expression falling to worry. I would've snapped back if his tone had let me, but it truly sounded sorrowful.
"Haven-"
"Gypsy, listen to me. I haven't forgotten you. Every day of my life, your face haunts me, what I did to you pains me, and the way I last saw you... I'll never understand what I did that hurt you so bad, but I'm begging you to let me make it up. I'll buy you dinner, lunch, breakfast, whatever you want. Can't we at least befriend each other?"
I slowly turned to face him, my heart feeling as cold as ice, "I'm sorry," I whispered, hanging my head. He stepped up to me, lifting my chin up with his hand.
He smiled reassuringly, "I'll come around tomorrow then? For breakfast?" I nodded, and he stepped back, "Come on, let's go finish up in there. Don't let your band down." And that's what I did. I took in a deep breath, then turned and walked back out on that stage, grabbing the mic. I formally apologized to the small crowd we had, then we played, and I left before anyone could question me.
When I got home that night, after my movie with Nate, he was still with me, arms wrapped around my waist as he set his lips over mine. He had me pinned against my door, and I was starting to feel very uncomfortable.
"Nate," I tried in between his sloppy kisses. But he didn't let up, he simply mumbled something and set his hand behind my back, "Nate!" He pulled back, this time, frowning at me.
"What?" He kept his hands on me, his expression covered in disappointment.
"You know what," I pried his hands off me, ready to just sleep after a long day.
"No? Is that going to be your answer forever? What if I told you I love you, Gypsy?"
"What? Nate, that's nonsense."
"Isn't it? Ever since the very first date, I've felt like all you've done is try and push me away, but I've only fallen harder, and I'm getting tired of chasing after you, Gypsy! I get it, you want to wait. That's fine. But you hardly even permit me taking your hand in mine! I'm tired of this. Why don't you tell me what's really going on?" He threw his hands up, frustrated.
I shook my head, turning away, "Nothing," I lied as I made my way towards the answering machine. I pushed down on the large, white button, Leah's voice filling the air.
"Gypsy? What happened? You got so upset, it's like he killed your sister or something! I have got to know the story between you two! Oh, and he's the one that came by earlier today, by the way, so you'll be seeing a lot of him," Great. Nate was right behind me.
Now, Lexi spoke, "Oh. My. God. I'm so sorry, Adrian called and told me everything. I know you have your date with your man tonight, but if you need to come over, I've already got a place for you to sleep that's totally crumb-proof. I also have a ton of chips," Damn her, too. She knew exactly what I needed, yet she was giving me away.
And then the next message, Adrian, "Gyps? You ok? You left so suddenly after... I called Lexi, I thought you might need her. She really cares about you, and also, she really wants to kill him. We all do. Love you, Gyps," I felt Nate's glare, boring into the back of my head. There was only one message left.
"Erm. Hello? Hi! So, are we still on for tomorrow? Jeremy gave me your number. I swear, nothing upsets that guy. He was so calm it was unnerving, whereas the rest of your band was having an absolute cow. Anyway, I'll be there around nine. Sound good? Call me back. Can't wait to hear your v- Erm. Hear from you. Goodnight, Gypsy." Haven. Haven had my number. Damn them all!
"Who was that?" Nate seemed to be holding back a truckload of anger.
"Uhm. A friend of my sister's."
"You don't have a sister."
"I don't? Oh. Well, my mother, then."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, goodnight."
"Gypsy.."
"Nate, please. It's been a long day."
"Then let's go out, tomorrow. At nine."
"I'm clearly busy. Goodnight." He finally gave up, turning on his heel, he stormed out my door, slamming it behind him. I sighed, sinking into my bed, beside Monty. He rolled over, lapping at my face, "At least you love me, Monty. Because you're such a good boy!" I smiled, scratching his neck. After a while, I drifted off, dreams of Haven Anderson haunting me.
