Stanzas for Slavery
This is about slavery. The first stanza is about a field slave. The second a house slave. The third a mixed race child.
The suns beating down on my aching back
Through the pounding of my heart I can hear the whip crack
My hands are stiff my throat is dry
There's nothing left I can't even cry
And yet some of the others they sing to the sky
Their voices twist, soar and fly
They reach the heavens and open the gate
And we know they can hear the pain of our fate
As I say goodbye to yet another child my heart still breaks
After doing this for years I still ache
Each child I raise has a spot in my heart
And it's odd to think that seeing as were worlds apart
It's hard having to move on
Especially when you've been with them for so long
But you have to remember who you are
Your just the slave you're not their mamma
I'm sitting in the corner along with the others
We've been excluded cos were oddly colored
Our skin is the mixture of black and white
People stare at us like we a curious sight
People ignore us they don't come near
I can see the disgust I can see the fear
I'm only little and I don't understand
Why we got to have separate land
