Stair Lift Installation

If you are concerned about yours or a family member's mobility problems, stair lift installation is the perfect way to solve them. Learn how you can install stair lift in your home.
Issues with mobility around the house can be something of a frustrating time for everyone in the house. One way a person can make life slightly easier around the house, is with an electric stair lift. It is stress-free, helps the person go up and down the stair with ease, and provides a sense of independence. Stair lift installation doesn't take much time or expertise. All you have to do is just follow the steps given in the article below on how to install a stair lift. This kind of lift won't even take that much space in the house. In fact, it provides enough room in the living room and on the stairs.

Installation Instructions

For installation, if the track where the lift is going to be placed is cut already, the entire process won't take more than an hour and half. The steps given below can be easily managed by one person. But if you wish to speed up the installation process, you can get someone to help you out.

The materials you'll be needing for the installation are a stair lift kit, screwdriver, and a hammer. Once you have the items ready, just follow the steps given below.
  • First of all, you need to purchase the stair lift. You can easily find a store in or near hospitals. Also, do a quick online research to find good deals on a wheelchair stair lift.
  • But before making the purchase, do measure the flight of stairs in order to ensure the length of the track is accurate.
  • Open the kit and place the lower track of the lift directly on the stairs. Attach its brackets to the steps using the stairs which came with the kit.
  • Check how many brackets your model has. Sometimes, it has brackets at the top, bottom, and in the middle of the stairs. Always place the track on the side of wall and not on the side of the railing of the stairs.
  • The reason to choose the wall side of the stair for installing the stair lifts is so that it doesn't block anyone from climbing up and down.
  • We will install the call box wiring first. This call box alerts the lift to come down the stairs whenever it has stopped at the top. You need to feed the cord through the track, inserting from the bottom and then pulling out from the top.
  • Again, the cord will be fed through against the wall and then underneath the track. This way, the cord won't be in anyone's way.
  • After you feed it through, look for a space where you can clip the cord in place (typically underneath the chair).
  • Next, you will place the upper track directly over the bottom track. The base of the seat will be attached between these 2 tracks.
  • Place the upper track in such a way that it slides inside the lower one and can be easily screwed in. Connect the upper track with the brackets you had attached before.
  • After both the tracks are in, install the chain. You will use this chain as a pulley in order to move the chair up and down the stairs. This chain fits properly in the middle of the track, keeping half on the left and the other half on the right side.
  • To check if you have installed the chain correctly, try moving it. If it moves independently, then it is properly secured.
  • Now the seat's power cable will go though the slot and into the track. This is the cable that will help lift the chair and make it move without getting stuck in the way.
  • This is one of the most important steps. The reason, if the power cable is wrongly placed, the lift can get pulled out of its track.
  • Use the screws to attach the lift's seat to the track. Place it so that whoever is using it can easily and comfortably use it. Don't test the seat till the entire installation has finished.
  • Finally, the main power cable of the stair chair lift goes inside the bottom of the track. Plug the end of the power cable to an outlet in the wall.
As every electric stair chair lift is different, the steps of the installation process may vary. Go over the owner's manual before you begin your project. This will give you complete information on the unit you purchased. If you get stuck anywhere, call customer service for further assistance. Ask kids (if there are any in the house) to stay away from the stair lift while installation and operating it all by themselves. And to ensure you safely use the stair lift, make sure the track is properly leveled before you attach it.
