Stabbing Pain in Back

Causes
In minor cases, severe pain in the back can be caused due to improper posture while sleeping and sitting. Apart from this, the following are more severe causes of excruciating pain in back.
Injury
Injury to the back is one of the most common causes of back pain. An injury or trauma due to accident or fall can lead to severe backache. On the other hand, sudden bending, lying down, lifting a heavy object can also cause injury to the muscles, resulting in a sharp back pain. Muscle spasm, sprain of the ligaments in the back can also cause severe pain in upper or lower back.
Herniated Disc
Herniated disc, also known as ruptured disc or slipped disc, is yet another condition, that gives rise to pain in the back. This condition occurs when the disc placed in between two vertebrae slips or ruptures. Herniated disc can be caused due to accident, injury or due to aging. The pain caused due to herniated disc origins in the back and runs down the leg. Sciatica is also one an important cause of stabbing pain on one side of the back that runs down in the leg.
Kidney Stone
Kidney stone can be of two types: calcium stones and uric acid stones. They are caused when the amount of calcium or uric acid in the body increases. Having excess of calcium supplements, high protein diet can lead to formation of calcium stones. On the other hand, not drinking enough water or not passing sufficient amount of urine also leads to kidney stone. This is one of the major causes of stabbing pain in lower back. Apart from it, pain in lower abdomen, difficulty and pain during urination, etc. are the symptoms of this disease.
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a degenerative disease that is caused due to decrease in bone mass and density. The exact cause of this disease is unknown, yet it is believed that aging, diet and hormones, play an important role in contributing to the cause of this disease. Osteoporosis is one of the significant causes of stabbing pain in upper back.
Treatment
If a person experiences stabbing back pain that lasts for more than a couple of hours, he / she should consult the doctor immediately. Treatment of injury depends on the severity. In some cases, medications, pain killers are effective; whereas in more severe cases, surgery may be required. Similar is the treatment method for herniated disc. On the other hand, kidney stone treatment can be treated with the help of medications (if the stone is smaller in size) or surgery (if the stone is large enough). Osteoporosis can be treated with the help of medications, physical therapy and hormone therapy. Lastly, once the disease is gotten rid of, one can follow several back exercises that help in complete back pain relief.
