My mother loves birds and always tries to find attractive bird feeders so she can fulfill her bird watching hobby. However, she always gets frustrated as along with birds, the squirrels would also show up. Now although these furry diners were always welcome, but not at the expense of losing all those beautiful birds. I wish there was a way she could have easily discouraged the squirrels from returning to the feeder. Even though years have passed, I would like to do my part at promoting a healthy, well-balanced ecosystem. In the following article, we will go over specific steps that will bring your one step closer to your squirrel proof bird feeder plans. All you have to do is, follow the directions, collect the materials, and make a successful buffet for birds.

Find/Make the Best Feeder

There are two main types of feeders available, natural and supplement feeding. The decision to choose which type of homemade feeder you wish to add in your garden depends solely to you. However, with the natural feeders, you can't ensure that the squirrels won't be a trouble. Which brings us to the supplemental feeding option, where you can count on birds to come every year for more. The variety and number of birds that will visit the feeder will definitely increase after its addition. There are various types of supplemental bird feeders which you can either make or purchase it from pet stores.
  • Tube Feeders
  • Hopper Feeders
  • Platform Feeders
  • Specialty Feeders
And while choosing birdseed, make sure you select different kinds. This will help attract varieties of birds to the feeder.

Build a Bird Feeder

The following steps are for making a spinning feeder. However, the main criteria are that it needs to be smart and agile. It's a fun arts and crafts project where kids can get involved as well. So gather everyone around and let's learn how to make a feeder.
  • To make your very own feeders, get six 2-liter bottles, rope, and a drill.
  • After cleaning all the 2-liter bottles, discard the caps (we won't be needing them for the feeders).
  • With the drill, punch holes on the bottom of all the bottles. The holes should be big enough for the rope to pass through.
  • Tie one end of the rope over a pole or tree branch (or anywhere you wish to hang the feeders).
  • Now insert the rope through 3 drilled bottles. Make sure that the bottles can spin independently.
  • If the feeder has a loop hanger, you can insert the rope through the other 3 drilled bottles as well. This way, you will have the feeder on both sides.
  • Tie the other end of the rope with the tree branch or pole. When the squirrels try to climb to the feeder, they will get hit by the spinning feeder instead.
  • Fill the bottles with a variety of birdseed and enjoy watching the fleet of birds.
Where you place the feeder is a critical part; you keep adding more and more feeders in your garden, and the maintenance will increase as well. Keeping the feeder clean by removing any debris and spilled seeds is important as it will stop from attracting squirrels and other animals. Don't hunt or poison the squirrels, release cats after them, or grease the poles or tree branches to rid yourselves of squirrels. Instead, you can also add cayenne pepper with the birdseed; this will also keep the squirrels away as they are sensitive to heat. Your bird feeder plans will work only when you have complete information about what you are and aren't supposed to do when it comes to dealing with animals.
