Spring into Colour

As summer approaches it is an opportunity to brighten your wardrobe and get out those black clothes.
As we move into the Spring and Summer the shops fill with color and we feel brave enough to consider leaving our comfort blanket of black clothes behind us for a while. Did you realize it’s a peculiarly British syndrome wearing black all the time? Only last Sunday afternoon, I drove past a pub; the garden was filled with customers enjoying the first of the warm sunshine and it was noticeable that over 75% of them were primarily wearing black! We think it’s normal and what everyone does but visit the continent and you’ll see it’s not the case. Our continental cousins are far more confident in color than we are.

And that’s the tricky bit for us. If we feel safe in black then every time we try something new and braver it feels strange and we just don’t know if we can get away with it! Panic sets in and we revert to the comfort of our black even if in our heart of hearts we know it make us look older or drained or exhausted. I remember how I felt when I had my colors analyzed and the consultant showed me how awful I looked in black. No wonder people were always asking me if I was ok or was I ill! But I was in shock!! How could life go on without black?

I decided to have a go wearing my new colors and just see what happened. I tentatively left my black clothes in a bin liner in the corner of the bedroom. Obviously I would be bringing them back into the wardrobe at some stage in the future when this silly experiment was over. I was amazed at the compliments I got at once. ‘Wow! You look good!’ came from a friend I saw regularly; more surprising was a stranger in the super market coming out with ‘Can I just say how lovely you look?’ - What a boost!

No one told me I looked tired or sick and I began to see for myself how much younger and healthier I looked. One day I decided I’d just get those favorite black jeans out of the sack. As I looked in the mirror I thought ‘Why would you want to look like that?’ Even with the right colors on the top half of my body I could see what a drain the black was. The corner had been turned and as I happily took my bin liner to the charity shop I walked forward into my new life without black!

Color for colors sake doesn’t achieve the same result but understanding and seeing for yourself which palette of colors compliment your individual skin tone, hair and eye color is a revelation. If you want to be safe choose true primary red. It’s the one color everybody can wear – yes even you red heads who were told by your mothers not to touch it! Every other color has either slightly more yellow or blue pigment in it. Color Analysis is the process whereby we discover whether you naturally have more yellow or blue pigment in the undertone of your skin and then by aligning the colors you wear, the hair color you choose and the make-up palette you work with, this enhances your natural assets. And before you tell me you haven’t got any natural assets….. everyone has! I am always delighted with the results of a Color Analysis Class. Every single person, male or female, goes out looking better then when they came in.

If you’re contemplating which of the gorgeous, vibrant colors in the shops this season, would work for you, be brave, come along to House of Color for Color Analysis and find out. It’s an exciting day that has positive results for the rest of your life.
