What is so special about pearl jewelry?
Pearls are nature’s best gifts and their natural lustrous shine with many shapes and sizes make pearl jewelry unique and graceful.
Among many other forms of jewelry such as diamond, gold, gem, silver etc. pearls have always fascinated women and designers and jewelers for centuries have always attracted women with their unique and classic designs, especially the pearl necklaces.
Before 19th Century only natural pearls were available from the deep see beds where divers often risk their lives to dig out these shining pearls from oysters. Quantities were small and often not dependable. But with the bead-nucleating technology developed by K.Mikimoto of Japan, the era of cultured pearls began. Quality was excellent and now with new techniques both Japan and China harvest these cultured pearls in large quantities. Prices have come down too and have become quite affordable.
Basically, pearl is a natural product of an oyster’s body defense mechanism. They grow inside their mother oysters with a shimmering iridescence, luster and soft inner glow that is unlike any other gem on the earth. When any irritant or a parasite enters inside an oyster or mollusk then the process of natural coating begins with layer upon layer of nacre inside the oyster. It is the thickness of nacre and its lustrous shine make these pearls more precious and attractive.
Pearls come in different types and go by various names such as Freshwater pearls, Akoya pearls, Tahitian and South sea water pearls depending upon the bivalve mollusks types producing them. No matter freshwater or seawater pearls, quality and price again depend upon the size, shape, luster, color and surface etc.
Brides, celebrities and all women in general have always been attracted by the sheer elegance of pearls and women look very graceful wearing these amazing pearl jewelry. Pearls are always in fashion and shall remain forever.
