Soundproofing Walls

Sometimes soundproofing walls is the only option left for minimizing external noise. In this article we are going to discuss the best ways to soundproof walls in homes.
Soundproofing a room or apartment becomes necessary when you want to control the amount of noise coming into or going out of the room. Usually soundproofing walls and ceilings becomes necessary when there is a lot of external noise that disturbs you and you want to minimize it. Whether it be the sound of traffic, noisy neighbors or sound from nearby construction, soundproofing your walls is the best option for achieving quiet and peace in your home. Before we get to know how to soundproof a room, we need to understand more about how sound travels.

Sound or noise is made up of waves that needs a medium to travel through. The kind of medium that sound waves travel through will determine the intensity of sound that you hear. Air provides little restriction for movement of sound waves so the intensity of sound that we hear is greater. To reduce sound, we need to block the flow of sound waves by using a barrier. However, this is not the only way to reduce sound. There are many soundproofing techniques by which we can eliminate or reduce noise to a great extend.

How to Soundproof Walls

There are three ways in which you can soundproof your walls. One is to increase the distance or space between the source of the sound and the receiver, second is to use sound absorbing material and the third is to use a good damping system. The first method is of course not always practically possible. So the only two options that we are left with is using a sound absorbing material and installing a damping system. The best way for soundproofing a room is by increasing the density of the walls. This can be done by installing sound absorbing materials like fiberglass insulation or Sheetrock.

Before we discuss how to soundproof the walls of a room, you need to understand the maximum amount of sound entering a room is through doors and windows. You can minimize the amount of sound entering through the windows by installing double glazed windows and using thicker drapes. For soundproofing walls, installing insulation on the walls is a very good option. Thicker the insulation for soundproofing, the more successful the soundproofing system will be. Fiberglass insulation and soundproofing foam spray are some of the best insulation materials for soundproofing. If your home is under construction, then it is very simple procedure to install insulation sheets in between the drywalls. On the other hand if you want to add insulation to already existing walls, then just cut holes in the drywall and then install soundproofing walls foam insulation in between the drywall. This type of fiberglass and foam insulation will not only help in absorbing noise but will also dampen excess sound in the room.

For soundproofing apartment walls, a simpler and cost-effective solution would be to increase the thickness of the walls. Most apartments are constructed of thin drywalls which is quite ineffective in absorbing or deflecting noise. So installing thicker drywalls is a good solution for soundproofing existing walls. Remember to use silicon caulking while installing drywall as silicone acts as a dampener and helps in absorbing any sound vibrations. You can also use Sheetrock instead of extra layer of drywall for soundproofing interior walls. Sheetrock which is a kind of plasterboard is inexpensive and works well in absorbing sound and also has good dampening qualities.

If you are wondering how to soundproof walls cheap, then adding soundproofing walls insulation is your best option. Good wall soundproofing systems can help in reducing noise and make your house quiet and peaceful.
