Sore Throat Treatment: Home Remedies for Sore Throat
Sore throat is a common unwelcome winter guest. As sore throat is a condition and not exactly a disease, there are many causes and commensurately many cures. When I say it is a condition, I mean that it is a fallout of some disease and rarely a disease by itself. You often witness sore throat primarily during cold dry seasons as the throat gets irritated. Another reason for sore throat is due to cough. The constant coughing action roughs up the throat. In case of clogged noses due to common cold people often breathe through their mouths. Unlike the nose, the mouth does not have protective mechanism against dust particles, which leave the throat mildly scarred. Often it may be a virus (adenovirus) which attacks the throat and settles on the tonsils, causing irritation in the throat. Sometimes a sore throat may be a fallout of another viral disease. There is also a bacterial variant of sore throat caused by Streptococcus. This is called the strep throat.

Thus we can see that the causes of sore throat are plenty. Remember, the best way to cure a disease is to create a condition which is unsuitable for the growth of the disease. As a sore throat isn't a very strong disease, sore throat treatment can be easily done at home. Sore throat remedies are simple and easy. Here's how to get rid of a sore throat.

Home Remedies for Sore Throat

Since the causes of sore throat are varied, sore throat remedies are cause-specific. You have to first analyze the cause before you get down to the cure for the disease. The most common cause of sore throat is the dry cold winters. If you observe that over the years sore throat has been a regular visitor during winters, make sure that your home is equipped with an air humidifier. Also ensure that you consume a good amount of water to keep the throat moisturized. Cut the problem at the root. If you know that dryness is the reason behind the soreness of the throat, then don't allow it to go dry. Make sure that you drink plenty of fluids.

The other cause of sore throat is due to cold and flu. Apart from flu itself being the cause of sore throat, breathing through the mouth is also known to create throat trouble. Cold causes blockage in the nose and makes breathing difficult, so people resort to breathing through the mouth which creates a sore throat.

Other simple home remedies for sore throat include gargling with warm salt water. Gargling with sufficiently hot salt water kills most viruses that have opened shop in your tonsils. Honey also acts as a soreness relief. Hard candies that contain honey, mint or ginger root work to soothe a sore throat too. There are other cough suppressants and pain killers available in the market. They do not exactly cure the throat but make the irritation in the throat less. Lemon tea is also very effective for sore throats.

Same goes for viral throats. If the adenovirus has settled on your throat, there isn't a definite sore throat treatment for that. The most you can do is consume the throat soothing substances given above and follow a healthy diet, so that the rest of the body remains impervious to harm.

Remember the old adage: Prevention is better than cure. Same applies to sore throat treatment. While there are several home remedies for sore throat, it is better to take preventive measures. Always ensure that you drink enough fluids. Protect yourself from cold and always keep the air humidifiers ready for winters.
