Something About - Chapter Nine
Something about daydreaming...
Daydreaming
The cold, gray morning brought with it a certain feeling of overall despair for the small group of three. In the bleak morning light everything seemed to take on a different shape. The overcast sky had Dusty and Ani huddling into the warmest gear that Faeryn could provide them. Although she provided them with no warming words of comfort to ease their overcast hearts.
In silence they began to walk. Neither Dusty nor Ani asking any question as to where they were going, Faeryn seemed to know the way like the directions came from inside of her. Faeryn always kept herself one step ahead of the girls, and as they walked, their every footstep making dusty clouds and creating the only noise for miles, Faeryn daydreamed. She let her mind slide back to one day that she had that she would forever remember.
********************************************
It was the only nice day Faeryn had ever had on the sea. The sun was shining and the sand on the beach provided a warm carpet to caress the bottoms of her feet. She was walking along, picking up shells from in the warm sand.
She was 16 and had barely known Ryder for a few months. But all the same, he was there and she was smiling. Her smile was nearly as warm as the sun shining down upon their backs.
Ryder placed his warm hand on her bare shoulder, sending an incredible shiver down her spine. She thought it was just the same way the sea caressed the shore. She had never pegged Ryder for the kind of guy that would enjoy this kind of thing. But all the same, he was with her, holding her hand as she slid her feet along the smooth sand of the shore, stopping to pick up shells.
They had laid down in the warm sand together after walking a distance and Faeryn had drifted off to sleep with her head on his chest and the sound of the ocean in the distance of her mind.
********************************************
Faeryn walked along the desert with the two girls following her. She ran over every detail of that one perfect day on the sea. The only perfect day she ever really had. A strange feeling came over her, one that she hadn’t felt in a very long time. The feeling of longing. Her heart longed for Ryder, the way the shore would long for the caress of the sea if it were to ever be separated.
She quickly shook the feeling off. Remembering that danger approaching was more important that her silly, school girl feelings. The mountains were off in the distance. The girls probably couldn’t see them yet, but Faeryn could, and that was where they were going. Her feet and her heart led her in the direction. The direction she had been traveling for some time now. The west. If there was anyone out there still fighting against the east then she would find them. She would help in any way that she could. She was willing to give up everything and anything for the good of her cause.
Her feet knew the way, and the girls followed her unquestioningly. She allowed herself to daydream some more. There was no harm in daydreaming… as long as she didn’t allow it to swallow her up.
********************************************
She drifted in her mind, to the day at the sea.
She awoke on Ryder’s chest. He smiled his crooked smile at her; it was a smile that went all the way to his ears. It was infectious and she smiled back at him.
"How long was I asleep for?" She questioned, sleepily, trying to gauge the time by the placing of the sun.
"Not long, dear. But you are rather adorable when you are asleep. Very innocent, unlike when your eyes are open and your mind is creating mischief." He teased her.
She grabbed a handful of sand quickly and tossed it into his messy hair. His reaction was just as quick and he had a handful of sand down the back her shirt in no time at all. She shrieked in a mixture of playful delight and shock.
********************************************
Faeryn could remember every detail; every single inch of Ryder’s face was burned into her mind, like the sun had burned her bare shoulders that day. She could picture his smile as if he were right in front of her. But he wasn’t.
Something else was though. Rather someone else. Faeryn could make out the vague outline of a small charcoal fire and the figures of two people up ahead in the hazy distance. She quickly turned and pulled the girls down beside her into a squat. The sparse bushes along the desert floor were barely enough to keep her hidden, but they provided better shelter than none at all.
"What is it?" Ani whispered. They were so close that she barely had to make a noise, her breath fluttering against Faeryn’s cheek.
"I’m not sure but I guess soon enough we will find out." Faeryn whispered back.
"What do we do now?" Asked Dusty.
"We wait."
