Softball as many of us know is a sport, derived from baseball; hence, most of the rules and regulations are similar to those of baseball, and has a history that is very much like baseball. The game play, batting and pitching and runs are also congruent to baseball. What differs is the dimensions of the ground, equipment and the style of game play.

Softball Pitching

As most of us know, the pitcher stands in the center of the field in order to pitch the ball at the batsman who is standing at the first base that is also commonly known as the batting base or the home base. The base where the pitcher stands is known as the pitching base or pitching plate. A genuine difference between baseball and softball is the style of pitching and the difference in balls. The ball that is used to play softball is often softer, bigger and has a larger mass. The different and bigger dimensions of the ball make softball a very difficult and challenging game to play. The speed of the ball is bit lesser as a result of the greater mass. The bigger size and different dimension pose as a challenge for a pitcher, fielder and also the batsman. Pitching the ball properly yet cunningly becomes difficult for the pitcher due to the greater mass and size. A greater mass means that the batsman has to apply more force, pressure and sheer logic while hitting the ball. The fielder has to be especially alert and cautious while catching the ball because of the fact that ball is very big and there is a good chance of dropping it.

So the question remains that how is the softball actually pitched? Here's the answer.

Softball pitching techniques are not at all very difficult. A simple application of logic and a few principles of physics can make you a very good pitcher. The pitching begins after the batter is ready, all the players are in the 'fair' territory and the umpire shouts 'play ball'. Now it is the job of the pitcher to throw ball in such a manner that the batsman is unable to hit the ball and it is caught by the catcher, who is located behind the pitcher. The ball is pitched in a different manner as compared to baseball and is known as the 'windmill' motion. While pitching the ball in a windmill motion the pitcher, makes a careful underarm throw. The ball is released when the motion of the arm is under the hip.

The ball then travels in a projectile motion and enters the strike zone. If you have pitched the ball cunningly, then the batter is not able to hit the ball. And it is caught by the catcher behind. Such a situation is known as a 'strike'. If the pitcher is able to pitch three strikes, then the batter is dismissed.

  • Feel the ball: Feeling the ball and its shape is an extremely important part of softball pitching. Your hand should be accustomed to the ball, its shape, size and weight.
  • Learn to observe: It is very important to learn and observe the motion of the ball and its projectile. Observation of the ball develops your sense of the game and judgment of the ball.
  • Be cunning: Cunning pitching is an important feature of a good pitcher. Observe the batter and his vision as he scans the field. Every batter looks for the right places to hit the ball and jumps at the opportunity when a simple ball is pitched. Simply don't pitch the ball that the pitcher wants. Also remember that you have to be extremely patient while pitching. Keeping your cool helps a lot during a frustrating game.
  • Concentrate: Concentration helps a lot in pitching. Act as if the world does not matter to you and fix the target in your mind.
