Creating the smokey eye effect is not just about having the right shades and hues of eye shadows, but it is also about learning to blend these colors in a seamless way. There are many variations of the smokey eye, and you can experiment with many deep colors like blue, purple and gold to break the monotony of black and gray.

How to Create a Smokey Eye Effect

To create smokey eye effect you will need the following things.
  • An eye primer
  • Black eyeshadow
  • Soft ocher eyeshadow
  • Silver gray eyeshadow
  • Black liquid liner
  • Medium eyeshadow brush
  • Angled eyeshadow brush
  • Smudging brush
  • Highlighter
  • Volumizing mascara in black
  • Eyelash curler
Method

First clean your entire eye area with a good quality eye makeup remover, to remove all traces of dust and grime. Now prepare the eye to create the smokey eyes by applying the eye primer all around the eyelid using your ring finger or index finger. Make sure that you cover the entire lid in evenly. Now dip your medium eyeshadow brush in the soft ocher eyeshadow color. Removing the excess apply a thin coat all over the lid, starting from the lash line all the way to your brow bone. Dip the brush in the silver gray eyeshadow pot and apply it to the inner corner of your eyelid, sweeping it all the way to the middle of the crease. Now blend the shadow outward with an angular eyeshadow brush in such a way that the hue is less along the outer corner of the eye.

Dip the brush in the carbon black eyeshadow pot and start applying this on the outer third of the crease of your eyelid by holding the brush horizontally. Smudge and blend the eyeshadow by moving the brush in a side to side motion to create a smokey eye effect. Ensure that you blend both the eyeshadows in such a way that no visible line between the two shades is seen. Apply some more carbon black eyeshadow towards the outer corner of your eyelid so that it looks almost saturated with color. Take the angular eyeshadow brush and apply a bit of shimmery highlighter on your brow bone and make sure that you blend it well with the eyelid. Moisten another clean eyeshadow brush in a bit of water and then dip it in carbon black eyeshadow. Apply this on the lower portion of your eye, as close to the lash line as possible to give the smokey eye look more balance. Now apply a light dusting of the silver gray over the lower lash line and smudge both the colors using a smudging brush.

Apply a thin coat of black liquid liner over the upper lash line, beginning from the inner corner of the eye to the outer corner. In a smooth and quick stroke, drag the eyeliner towards the outer corner of the eye in an outward motion, so that it has a winged effect. Make the wing extending from the outer corner of your eye meet the lower eye so that it looks continuous. Curl your lashes with an eyelash curler and apply two coats of volumizing mascara to finish the smokey eye effect.
