Smoke Detector Chirping

Smoke detector chirping ruining your entire day? Read on to find out how to stop the smoke detector chirping once and for all.
A smoke detector, as the name suggests, is a smart device which detects smoke. These smoke alarms, powered by a central fire alarm system are used pretty much everywhere, in large commercial uses, industrial uses, and big residential buildings. However, a single household utilizes smoke detectors which can be powered with the help of single disposable battery. Although a single smoke detector doesn't need constant maintenance, only at times of changing the battery, there may be times when it can act a bit weird. Sometimes, it may start to chirp or beep throughout the day, especially at nighttime. It's a frustrating moment when you want to go to bed after having spent the entire day working and running errands, the beeping wakes you up. What do you do then? You've already changed the batteries few days ago, so you can rule that issue out. This late in the night, all you want to do is stop the beeping noise and go back to your comfortable bed. But all you're doing is staring at the beeping device with hands over your head and wondering why it won't stop already. Let's try to find the root cause of this annoying issue and get you back to bed in no time.

Smoke Detector is Chirping every 30 Seconds

Many of us, in hopes of getting a good night's sleep and avoiding to wake up everyone in the house as well as the neighbors, yank out the smoke detector and its batteries. However, that is not a good idea. The smoke detector is there for a reason, to warn you about a possible fire. So, before you jump to the decision of taking the batteries out, why not try another solution.

Step 1: The first issue arises due to the batteries. Now, it may seem highly unlikely that the chirping isn't stopping even after the batteries have been replace. So the first step will be to see if the batteries are of good quality and see if they are not leaking. As the leaking batteries may not be strong enough to work properly. In that case, you need to change the batteries as soon as possible. Also, another genuine and silly error can occur if you've placed the batteries backwards.

Step 2: Now hold the test button which is on your smoke detector. This will reset the alarm and clear out any issues with the non-functional battery from its internal memory. See if your smoke detector "passes" the test; if not, try the next step(s).

Step 3: Take the vacuum attachment that you use for cleaning computer keyboards and other small corners around the house. Vacuum away any dust, insects, or spiderwebs from the smoke detector sensor. Spiderwebs and dust are very common issues for making your smoke detector chirp a lot.

Step 4: For persistent beeping, try changing the temperature in your house. If you face the issue of smoke detector making a beeping noise every 30 seconds or regular intervals, then it might be thinking that your house is too hot or too cold. Change the temperature and wait for few hours to see if the beeping has stopped or not.

Step 5: If you have more than one smoke detector installed in your house, one smoke alarm can offset the other. So, insure that you are working on the correct smoke detector. You can ask your friends to stand under every smoke detector and find out which one is the culprit. Once you find the source, you can start troubleshooting the right alarm.

As a final option to solve your smoke detector chirping, call for an authorized electrician to take a look at it. He/she might detect a malfunction (due to electrical short or wrong wiring) in your current smoke detector and ask you to get a replacement.
