Terriers come in all sizes, viz., small, medium, large, tall as well as short. Terrier dogs are known for their hunting skills. And the first thing that comes to our mind on hearing the word 'terrier' is the picture of a Bull terrier, it is not one of the small terrier breeds though. A Bull terrier comes under the big sized terrier dog breeds.
Small Terrier Breeds
Toy Fox Terrier: This dog is also called the amer toy and it is an athletic looking toy dog breed. Toy Fox Terrier is elegant, has a dome shaped head with a narrow muzzle and dark round eyes, a diminutive stature with a muscular body. You can identify this dog by its erect V-shaped ears with the tail pointing up. These dogs usually have white with black and / or tan spotted coat which is short, smooth and shiny. Toy Fox Terrier weighs around three and a half to seven pounds.
Yorkshire Terrier: This terrier has a nickname, the yorkies. It is a well proportioned and rugged toy dog breed with a small head and medium-sized eyes, and small V-shaped, pointed ears. Its coat is long, straight and shiny, which may touch the floor. The hair on the Yorkshire terrier's head and muzzle is usually long. Owners of these dogs often tie a bow or clips around these dogs' necks. Although the Yorkshire puppies are normally darker in color, they develop a golden tan on their head, chest and legs, the rest of the body being steel blue, as they grow up. The Yorkshire terrier weighs around five to seven pounds.
Norfolk Terrier: This is one dog that has acquired a nickname, the demon, quite contrary to its nature. Unlike most terriers, Norfolk terriers are obedient and easily trainable. They have a broad and slightly rounded skull, expressive eyes and V-shaped pendulous ears that fold and drop on their cheeks. Being one amongst the smaller breeds weighing around 11 to 15 pounds, this dog has sturdy legs and a short body. The Norfolk's coat is wire-haired and hard. The coat is longer on the neck, shoulders, mustache, beard and eyebrows and shorter on the head and ears. These terriers come in a variety of colors like, red, yellow or wheatish, black and brown or gray.
The Norfolk terrier is often confused with the Norwich terrier probably because both the breeds look similar and are excellent ratters. Both these dogs were considered as two varieties of the same breed. It was only after 1964 that the drop-eared ones were named the Norfolk terrier and the erect or pointed-eared variety was classified as the Norwich terrier.
Though the Norfolk is a very lively, friendly, energetic, happy and fearless small terrier breed, they can be reserved with outsiders or strangers. Since children tend to get very comfortable with these small terrier breeds, they make good family dogs.
Silky Terrier: The Australian Silky Terrier was known as the Sydney silky. This small terrier breed is a fairly sturdy toy dog. It has a long low body with a tail that can be docked, wedge-shaped head, small expressive eyes and pricked V-shaped ears. The Silky terrier has a smooth and silky coat and no undercoat. The adult Silky terriers' hair could grow up to 4 to 6 inches long with a cowlick on the head and a clear parting on the back from the neck to the tail. The Silky terrier puppy's coat is black and light brown and changes to hues of blue (steel to grayish shades) and tan when it is an adult. They weigh around 8 to 11 pounds.
Cairn Terrier: Terry, the dog who played toto was a Cairn Terrier. A Cairn Terrier is a tough little dog who gels with people well and is quite happy having them around. The Cairn Terrier is one of the smallest terrier breeds that are known as the working terrier dog breeds. It is an active little terrier with short legs and a strong diminutive body. The Cairn terrier's coat is rough and thick, whereas the undercoat is short, soft and furry. Cairn terriers weigh around 13 to 17 pounds.
