Small Cats

Cats are really interesting animals that you can have as a pet. They say cats are the most undemanding pets you can ever have. However, I beg to differ. I own a cat, sorry, I mean I am owned by a cat and believe me, his majesty has a lot of demands! I have no qualms about giving in to most of his demands, however I know the right time to put my foot down. Anyway, I got him as a gift and could not resist giving into his regal charms, although he was a really small cat back then. He has grown and is about 14 months old and a really large and handsome tom-cat. My friend who too got interested in becoming a cat slave, asked me a simple question, are there any small cats?

I am sure there are many others with a similar desire to own a feline pet, but wonder if there are small cat breeds. The reasons one may want to own small domestic cats as pets may include a small living area. Small cats will be able to impart the pleasure of having a pet in limited space. Some people may also want small cats as pets as they do not require much exercise and activity like dog. Small domestic cats tend to remain more of a lap cat that you can cuddle and hold in your arms easily. Maybe some believe they may shed less. Hmmm, whatever may be the reason of owning small cats as pets, there are a variety of small cat breeds that you can choose from. Let's see some of the types of small cats in the following paragraph.

Types of Small Cats

Small cat breeds are perfect for homes with limited space or those who love cats, kitten size. There are many small domestic cat breeds, some of which are discussed below.

Singapura
The Singapura are very small cats, so small that they are known as the smallest cat breeds in the world. They have originated on the Singaporean streets and are known for their short, ticked sepia coats that have a really silky touch. Their eyes are usually green or amber in color and perfect for those who want their cats to remain kittens for a long time. The coat color of the Singapura cat is brown or beige and is referred to as sepia agouti or brown ticked agouti. Although they have a really delicate appearance, they are muscular and heavy.

Rusty Spotted Cat
Another very small cats is the Rusty spotted cat. It is only 14 to 17 inches in body length, and add about 6 to 10 inches for its head and tail. They are just 1.5 kg in weight, and it is not surprising to find one that is just 1 kg in weight.

Balinese
The Balinese cat is a small cat that needs a lot of attention. It is very active and vocal cat. It is a really graceful cat and named after the Balinese dancers who are known for their gracefulness.

Munchkin
The Munchkin cat is a small to medium-sized cat that is about 2 to 4 kg in weight when fully grown. The Munchkin has short legs due to a natural mutation. This cat is a really playful and active cat, who loves to run.

Devon Rex
The Devon Rex is one of the small cats that is a great pet for homes with small living space. It weighs just 3 to 4 kg when fully grown. They have short, curly hair, big eyes and really big ears.

Lambkin
Lambkin Dwarf or Nanus Rex is a hybrid of Munchkin dwarf cat and Selkirk Rex cat. These are really rare small cat breeds.

Skookum
The Skookum is a hybrid of Munchkin and LaPerm. This hybrid was developed in the 1990s and these cats have very short legs and curly hair. The Skookum cat personality is on the athletic side and you will find these cats jumping and climbing. These playful felines are really affectionate pets.

Minskin
The Minskin is a new cat breed that has hair on its face, ears, nose, legs and tail and the body has a very sparse cover of hair. This cat is really playful, loyal, intelligent and affectionate.

Miniature Cats

Miniature cats are very small cats that are really rare. These types of cats are actually normal cats that have been downsized by selective breeding. The teacup cats are even smaller than miniature cats. One of the examples of a miniature cat is Singapura cat, that makes it the smallest cat breed.

Exotic Small Cats

By exotic small cats, one means the wild cats that you would find in a jungle. There are about 37 species of exotic small cats that not many are aware of. Lets me enlist some of the exotic cats found in the wild:

I really enjoy having a cat around the house, who forever reminds me that in spite of being high up in the food chain, I still have to bow down to the whims and fancies of his majesty.
