Small and Portable LCD TV: The Advantages and Disadvantages

Small and portable flat screen LCD TVs are perfect for some and are not so perfect for others. This article provides some insights as to the instances wherein they are such for any given situation.
Conventionally speaking, portable LCD TVs are defined to be those flat screen televisions that measure 9 inches (diagonally) and smaller while small LCD TVs are those that measure between 9 to 24 inches. These electronic gadgets are usually pretty amazing but before buying any, you need to be aware that they, like many other gadgets, will not shine in all situations that you can think of. You need to find out first how to maximize their functions and to know if they are perfect for you.

The Advantages

When something becomes smaller and more compact, a whole lot of possibilities for it emerge. For example, imagine having a 7-inch portable LCD TV and what you can do with it. Absolute TV entertainment anywhere, anytime. You will be able to enjoy your favorite shows at the park, inside your car, home or while waiting in a coffee shop or restaurant – basically almost anywhere you may be.

However, if you are not the type who is not always mobile and on the go and just loves staying at home, a small LCD TV, flat screen televisions that measure 10 inches to 24 inches, will be perfect for your lifestyle most especially if you want to maximize a smaller home space that you may have. You will easily find a place to put a 15 to 24-inch LCD TV. Just mount one near the kitchen or dining area so you can watch while you are cooking or eating or just lounging on the sofa. Mini libraries and hobby rooms will become a bit more cozy with a 15-inch flat screen of television, too!

Do not underestimate the small sizes of small and portable flat screens. A small LCD TV can easily be the highlight of your home entertainment system, most especially for compact home spaces. Hook it up easily with a DVD player for some high definition movie experience, attach some great sound system to get that surround sound theater feel right at the comfort of your home. There is no such thing as limited space with small and compact LCD TVs.

Furthermore, another advantage of LCD TVs is the reduced glare coming off of the screen. This may be attributed to the matte finish on the screen that manufacturers put on them, which is unlike the glass surface on a typical CRT and plasma TV. This makes the LCD TVs ideal even in bright areas that may be near the windows

The Disadvantages

Those accustomed to bigger screen televisions may find small and portable LCD TVs frustrating because of their small screens. People may find looking at tinier screens a bit more tiring to the eyes especially if you like watching for long periods of time.

Furthermore, cheaper LCD TVs may experience the motion blurring problem which was a notorious weakness of most of its earlier incarnation. Cheaply made ones may still have this problem. Motion blurring happens when movement of images on the LCD screen are not rendered or refreshed fast enough by the liquid crystal pixels which create ghost trails and lag in quick movement. This makes the moving images fuzzier than they should be. This problem has been improved upon by modern, higher quality LCD TV units that usually cost more. If you don't watch too much sports and action films, you probably won't mind getting the flat screens that have slower refresh rates (and are cheaper). However, if you are into a lot of fast action sports and movie flicks, then you will probably will be frustrated by the lower quality and cheap LCDs.

Another drawback for LCD TVs is the limited viewing angle. An LCD TV is best watched when you're within a certain angle in front of the TV because the picture or viewing quality gets worse as you move outside of that angle and goes farther from the center.

And of course, LCD TVs are still not as cheap as the traditional CRT televisions. There are indeed brands that offer cheaper than usual flat screen LCDs but you will more likely pay for that in poorer picture quality and limited durability. When it comes to flat screen TVs, like many things in life, you often get what you pay for.

Do you need one?

Portable and small LCD TV flat screens are ideal for many situations but they are also quite frustrating to work with in some situations. They are best for small homes and for mobile entertainment when you're on the go. They aren't ideal for those who like big screens and are easily fatigued by watching small ones. It is best to carefully study your need for such a TV before you go buy one.
