The Republic of Slovenia is a small European country bounded on the west by Italy and the Adriatic Sea, on the north by Austria, on the east by Hungary, and on the south by Croatia. Its capital is Ljubljana. Before 1918, Slovenia belonged to Austria-Hungary; from 1918 to 1991 it was part of Yugoslavia. It declared its independence on June 25, 1991. It is a mountainous land the Julian and Karawanken Alps to the north and in the south, the Dinaric Alps. The climate is moderate. Precipitation varies between 800 mm (31.5 in) and 1,200 mm (47.2 in) per year.
