Sliding All the Way to the Top: The Samsung B7610 Omnia Pro

The new Samsung B7610 Omnia Pro will be sporting the familiar slider form factor, but with a bit of a twist. Instead of having a slide-out alphanumeric keypad, the B7610 Omnia Pro makes use of a full QWERTY keyboard instead. Also, unlike most sliders in the market today, the B7610’s keyboard slides from the left side – a style made famous by the T-Mobile Sidekick 3 back in 2006. But that’s not all; this newest addition to the line of Omnia devices will also be equipped with a powerful 800 Mhz processor with a dedicated graphics accelerator. For the users, this guarantees a smooth sailing navigation experience.

The Basics

The B7610 Omnia Pro does share one glaring similarity with most of the new slider mobiles in the market today – the bulk factor. It will have measurements of 112.6 x 57.8 x 16.2 mm and its weight will be at a whopping 159 grams. It has an above average internal memory of 1GB which is upgradable to up to 32 GB via the microSD card slot. Aside from being a quad band device over the 2G network (GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900), the B7610 Omnia Pro will also work in HSDPA 900 / 2100 on the 3G network.

In terms of data connectivity, all the usual culprits are there – GPRS (Class 10; 32-48 kbps), HSCSD, EDGE (Class 10; 236.8 kbps), WLAN (Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g), and of course version 2.0 of Bluetooth (with A2DP). Also on board is a commendable 5-Megapixel snapper that is capable of taking photos of up to 2592 x 1944 pixels. The camera will also feature an LED flash, autofocus, best shot, panorama shot, and geo-tagging, among other functions.

First Screening

One of the best features of the Samsung B7610 Omnia Pro has to be its excellent 3.5-inch touch screen. Although in terms of size it may not be anything out of the ordinary, it’s with the features that the B7610’s display is able to stand out. For starters the high resolution screen has a pixel display of 800 x 400 as well as 16 million colours. Although some may criticize the use of a resistive touch screen, Samsung’s proprietary AMOLED feature which provides advanced display technology is able to make up for any shortcomings. Aside from the usual accelerometer censor, the B7610’s screen will also feature another first from Samsung – the advanced R touch screen display technology.

Some Wizardry

Samsung definitely didn’t want to put the B7610 Omnia Pro’s powerful 800 MHz processor to waste. They reacted well to the myriad of negative reviews received by Windows Mobile by focusing all their attention on their own user interface. Instead of turning their back on the Microsoft-based OS, Samsung made vast improvements on their TouchWiz UI which sometimes, makes you forget that the device is even running on WinMo. You can wave goodbye to Windows Mobile’s boring menus and sluggish nature as the wizard is definitely able to work its magic.
