Slider with an Attitude: the Samsung Omnia Pro B7610

Samsung recently announced a number of new handsets that they intend to release towards the latter part of 2009. Among that list is the new Samsung Omnia B7610, which is equipped with a QWERTY keyboard that slides out. Here’s a quick review of the latest from Samsung.

The Good Side

Although the B7610’s 3.5-inch screen is not as big as the one in the Omnia II (which is 3.7 inches), it still remains to be quite an impressive display. It makes use of Samsung’s proprietary AMOLED technology and is of the resistive variety. The touch screen has a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels and can display up to 16 million colours.

Samsung has yet to confirm the specifics on the B7610’s processor. However, what we do know is that it will be clocked at 800 MHz which is definitely a good thing as it will be powerful enough to run the mobile’s applications at high speeds. This will be beneficial for business users who will utilize the B7610’s system-intensive apps.

The Bad Side

One criticism about the B7610 is that its slide-out QWERTY keyboard makes the device quite thick (16.2 mm). This may prove to be an issue once the phone is placed inside the pocket because of the awkward bulge it will create.

Having HSDPA support for data transfer has become a prerequisite feature on Smartphones. The Omnia B7610 is able to satisfy this category but the problem is that its connectivity is capped at 3.6 Mbps. This is a far cry from the 7.2 Mbps speed of most Smartphones in the market today. For the users this means they won’t be able to enjoy the fastest (highest bandwidth) mobile broadband plans offered by operators.

Fearless Forecast

Most experts believe that Samsung won’t be able to release this Smartphone by Q3 of this year as slated. This may actually work in their favour as it is more likely that it will retail with the latest Microsoft OS, Windows Mobile 6.5. But even if it comes out with the lower version (6.1), Samsung has promised a free upgrade once it becomes available.

The fact of the matter is that the B7610 does have a lot of similarities with the HTC Touch Pro 2 – a Smartphone already released a few months back. Consumers will expect constant improvements in their mobiles so they may not be too excited with a new Smartphone that they’ve already seen, feature-wise at least.
