Sleep Problems in Children

Sleeping is very important for your body. It not only allows your body to rest it also allows the brain to process events that have occurred during the day. This is particularly important in children to aid development.

After a good night's sleep the body feels refreshed, energized and awake. In children the effects of sleep deprivation and sleep problems are more noticeable due to the developments that the body is going through.

It's important for your child to know that bedtime is a good time and that the bedroom is a safe place. You can help your child know bedtime is enjoyable by reading a bedtime story or giving your child a cuddle.

Try to develop a routine for your child's bedtime. Ensure the bedtime story starts at the same time every night so your child's body clock knows when it's time to fall asleep.

Never use your child's bedroom as a punishment area when they've done something wrong. This will enforce the idea in their mind that the bedroom is a bad and negative place which will create sleeping problems in the future.

When your child goes to bed they should feel happy, secure, safe and comfortable.

It's very important to make sure there are no distractions presented to your child when they're trying to sleep. Remove TV's or games consoles from the child's bedroom.

If your child can't sleep it may solve the problem in the short-term to let them sleep in your bed. But be careful not to start a habit as this can become very difficult to break.
