Skin Tag Removal

More than a medical problem, a skin tag is an undesirable cosmetic problem. Fortunately, there are several ways to get rid of this problem.
People have always been conscious of skin tags, and their hanging state is definitely a cause of concern to people who are deeply conscious of their beauty. That is the reason why people keep trying to remove the tags from their skin.

But why would you want to remove skin tags in the first place?

Yes, it is true that skin tags look quite ungainly and some people get scared when they appear. They are associated with cancerous growths. But, skin tags are not cancerous at all. Identify a skin tag like this – it should be of the same color or a little darker color as the skin, it should be easily movable, it should be attached to the skin with just a narrow stalk and it should not bleed or change remarkably in a short time. If it is behaving erratically with any of these above points, then it is not a skin tag. However, if it is a skin tag, it is not cancerous and you need not worry on health grounds.

But there could be some reasons why you would want to remove it. The first is the cosmetic factor of course, skin tags on the face and neck region look very ugly. Also, if your skin tag is getting constantly irritated by your clothing, you need to remove it or it could get infected. The same applies if it is getting brushed by metallic parts of your clothes like zippers and buttons or jewelry.

So how are skin tags removed?

It is thoroughly ill-advised to remove skin tags at home, though there are methods to do it. In fact, in the navy, they will just pull the skin head with a pair of tweezers and then cut it off at the stalk! Of course it bleeds and hurts, but these guys are accustomed to that. Some people try some household methods for skin tag removal, and while these methods are not ineffective, they are certainly not recommended. For one, if you try removal of the skin tag at home, there might be more bleeding than warranted, and you could also expose yourself to the risk of infection. However, there are some natural skin removal methods out there that claim to remove the tag from the root by mere application on the skin. But, how effective they are, is a matter or skepticism.

Doctors would remove skin tags, it is a very simple but expensive procedure. Expect to pay something like $250 for one session with the doctor to remove skin tags. However, you can be sure of a permanent and less painful removal.

The following are the procedures doctors adopt for removing skin tags:
  • Applying electric current – A very thin blade is made hot with electricity and is applied on the stalk of the skin tag. There is very minimal pain, and it is more like a trickling effect than a pain. The hot blade cuts the stalk and at the same time seals off the blood capillaries there so that there is absolutely no bleeding. This is a very simple method, one that can be done even while sitting in the doctor's office. Medically, the method is known as electro-cauterization.
  • Freezing – A very simple method is to freeze the area of the skin tag with liquid nitrogen. When the skin tag gets frozen, it will shed off naturally. This method is known as cryotherapy.
  • Surgery – The surgical removal of the skin tag is done by masterfully making an incision at the stalk of the skin tag and removing it. Generally, this is a painless procedure when done by an expert surgeon and will not even require an anesthetic.
Removing skin tags is easy, but it must be done in the right way by an expert. If done by an inexperienced person, there are chances of recurrence.
