~Sam~

"Hey, Sam. Can we talk?" asked Connor at lunch. It was obvious he was going to break up with me. 3 things made that totally obvious. 1 he didn't call me 'babe', 2 his expression gave it away, 3 guys usually don't say 'Can we talk?' unless they want to break up with you.

I followed him to the corner of the cafeteria. When he turned around to face me I said. "Why are you breaking up with me?"

"How'd you know?" he said in a mild tone.

"Please." I said rolling my eyes at him.

"Can we still be friends?" he asked. I stared him for a few minutes, until I cracked a smile and nodded. I wasn't really that hurt by him breaking up with me and I knew it was because he still loved Peyton.

"Hope everything works out between you and Peyton." I said before I headed back to my lunch. He seemed pretty surprised that I'd picked up on that.

"What just happened?" asked Aubrey the minute I got back. She was more interested in my relationship with Connor than me and Connor combined.

"We broke up." I said casually. When Aubrey heard that, she looked ready to cry. Aubrey's great, but she's a total Drama Queen.

"Oh, honey that's too bad. You two were good together." said Jada from her seat next to Carter. They were still going strong, which upset me.

"Who are going to go with to The Monster Mash?!" shrieked Aubrey. At our school, going to a dance without a date is like jumping off the Empire State Building. You just don't do it, its social suicide.

"My brother's coming home for a week and he’s bringing his friend, Justin Bray, I could go with him." I said. My brother, Aiden, is awesome. He took me to my first party in the 7th grade, he taught me how to drive, when I was 14 he took me on a road trip without telling mom and I had the time of my life. Now, he goes to college at Dartmouth.

"Oh yeah, isn't Justin your brothers best friend?" she said. She had met Justin once and developed a massive crush on him. You couldn't really blame her, Justin's smart, funny, and hot.

"Yep, he's like family. Speaking of the dance, who are you going with?" Whenever Aubrey had a date of any kind she'd call me instantly and I'd become temporarily deaf.

"I can't tell you." she said, looking like it was killing her not to tell me.

"Okay. Hey Carter." I said, interrupting what looked like a very serious conversation between him and Jada.

"Yeah?" he said. The way Jada was looking at him made me think that they were having a fight. I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't happy to see the perfect couple having a spat.

"We still on for tonight?" I asked, referring to the movie night we had the last Tuesday of every month. I could see anger fill Jada's eyes and I figured that our plans were interphiring with some kind of date.

"Umm... I'll call you." he said, glancing at his brooding girlfriend.

"Okay." I said. It looked like him and Jada might finally be breaking up.

~Calculus~

"Hey, Jada." I said, sliding into the seat next to hers. She still seemed angry for some reason, and Jada wasn't the kind of person you want to mess with when she got angry.

"I know you like Carter." she said glaring at me. When she said this my heart sank. How could she find out? I'd fooled everybody since pre k and I'd made Aubrey swear that she would never tell. There was no way she could've found out.

"What are talking about?" I asked weakly.

"I've seen the way you look at him. I'm warning you, Sam. Stay away from Carter." she said in a voice that was almost as haunting as the glare she was giving me. I was speechless.

"Jada-" she cut me off. I'd never seen her act like this.

"No, don't give me that crap. You like Carter and you better stay away from him, or you will be sorry." she said. I'd found a fault in Jada. She was a jealous monster. I was shocked. Every time I'd tried to guess her fault I thought it would be something like she smoked or she cheated on Carter but this was just weird.

"Shut up class." said the horrible Ms. Holt. "You know what would make class interesting? A pop quiz." she said.

~After School~

The door bell rang and I got up from the couch and answered the door. I saw someone that I was expecting but I wasn't expecting the person that his hand was intertwined with.

"Umm... Carter, Jada.... hi." I said slightly confused. Our movie nights usually only included me and Carter. We hadn't even let Aubrey participate. I figured Jada had forced Carter to take her to make sure that Carter and I weren't going out behind her back, which was ridicules. If Carter and I were dating I'd brag about it to the whole school.

"Hi." said Carter, obviously uncomfortable. It would have been hilarious to me if it hadn't been for the fact that Jada was intruding on something that Carter and I had been doing since the 4th grade.

"Hi Sam, I love your place." said Jada, with a fake smile spread across her stupid face.

"Thanks." I said stepping aside so that they could enter. I had a difficult time not kicking Jada like a child. I thought I'd hated Jada before, now I absolutely despised her. How dare she do something like this? She had no right.

"Carter can I talk to you?" I asked 20 minutes into the first movie, The Godfather.

"Sure." he said getting up. As we left the room, I caught Jada throwing daggers at me through her eyes. It seemed like she seriously thought that Carter was actually cheating on her with me. I wish.

"So what'd you want to talk about?" he asked like he really didn't know.

"Why did you bring her?" I asked bluntly. He knew that was coming. It took him a minute to answer.

"Look she kept bugging me and I didn't know what to do so I just gave in." I gave him my what-the-heck stare, I knew he hated it when I looked at him like that and that's exactly why I did. I just couldn't understand why he'd allow her to come to this of all things.

"Oh, don't give me that look. Is it really that bad having her here?" he asked. I couldn't even believe that he was saying that.

"Yes, it is." I said extremely frustrated with the both of them. Carter, for allowing Jada to come and Jada, for convincing carter to allow her to come. I needed Audrey here, she was my only ally!
