"Inflammation of one of the paranasal sinuses", is what is the standard definition of sinusitis or sinus infection. This condition may occur in two forms; acute and chronic. There isn't much of a difference between the two, in terms of causes, symptoms and to an extent, treatment. However, since one is acute and other is chronic, the severity may somewhat differ. A person is said to have this condition, when the cavities around his nasal passages, suffer inflammation and swelling. Below is the segment that consists of the causes and symptoms of the condition.

Symptoms
The symptoms which occur in acute sinusitis, do not vary with the ones which are caused by the chronic sinusitis. Commonly appearing symptoms include throbbing pain that seems to radiate around the eyes, cheeks and other parts of the facial area, cough that may get worse at nights, and nasal obstruction which may cause breathing difficulties. Also, there would be the production of thick, yellowish or greenish mucus which would be felt flowing from the nose or down the back of the throat. Sinusitis may even cause reduction in the sense of smell and taste, as one of its symptoms. Some people may have to confront some other symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, earache, sore throat and foul breath. The sufferer may seem more irritable than normal.

Causes
Most common causes of sinus infection include infections of the respiratory tract. These may be caused by bacteria, virus or fungi. Other factors which are also considered as common offenders are nasal polyps or tumors, deviated nasal septum, tooth infection and certain allergic reactions. Even an injury to the face may cause the infection, as it may cause obstruction in the nasal passages. Disorders related to the immune system may have sinus infection as one of their complications.

Sinusitis Treatment Guidelines
The procedures which are applied for treating chronic sinusitis are same in case of acute sinusitis. And what are these procedures? Know from what follows...

It has been noticed that most cases of acute sinusitis are an outcome of an infection of the cold virus. And this is the reason, why most people do not require any medical treatment, as the condition self resolves. The virus has to run its course and the condition will cease after some time. What can be done is easing the symptoms and hastening the recovery.

Recommended medications for treating sinusitis include saline nasal sprays, decongestants and OTC pain killers. Also, nasal corticosteroids may be recommended to cope with inflammation and swelling.

Antibiotics are of no help in treating sinusitis as the condition is a viral one. Also, there are rare cases when a sinus infection is caused by any fungal infection. But if it is, then intravenous antifungal medication may be prescribed for the patient.

If allergies have caused the sinusitis, then the treatment would involve immunotherapy. What this treatment does is, it helps the body reduce its reaction to specific allergens, with the help of allergy shots.

Surgery may also come into the picture when the cause of the sinusitis include factors such as nasal polyps or deviated nasal septum.

Apart from the treatment which you receive medically, there are a few things you can carry out at home, to hasten the recovery period. Give yourself plenty of rest and drink plenty of fluids. Get some steam inside your nasal cavities, and apply warm compresses to your aching face. If you are aware about nasal irrigation, then there is nothing like making use of it to relieve sinusitis at home. Also, try sleeping with your head elevated. This would help in reducing the congestion.
