Single Female Blues on Valentine's Day - Part 1

Just take a deep breath of O2, a gulp of H2O and start planning a day and/or night of fun with your single female friends.
If you are a single female, you might have recently pondered the fact that Valentine’s Day is just another calendar page away. If you feel panicked by that thought, don’t rush around trying to find a "fly-by-night" boyfriend who will last no longer than midnight on the 14th of February. Just take a deep breath of O2, a gulp of H2O and start planning a day and/or night of Valentine’s MEMORIES for you and your single female friends.

You might be wondering, "Why?"

Why would you take the time and effort to create a memorable Valentine’s Day for you and your single female friends when you could be inside your home feeling sorry for yourself, or better yet…..throwing eggs and bitter diatribes at your x-boyfriend’s house? Okay, so maybe that’s exaggerating a bit, but in my humble opinion holidays merit the effort it takes to really enjoy them. After all, holidays are like weekends. If you don’t observe them, your mind will default to a "weekly" state of numbness.

Also, it is inspiring to look at the positive side of life. I found an article online that I thought was inspiring. The author was (or still is) a divorced single female parent who decided to plan Valentine’s Days that would help her grow closer to her kids, to her friends and to strangers that she didn’t even know. I thought her article, when applied, would be worth its weight in gold.

I hope you will find the suggestions in this article are made of the same metal:

1) Party "Hearty" with Your Single Female Friends

Invite your single female friends over for a party and make it simple. Before the party, ask each of your single female friends to bring a gift that reminds her of Valentine’s Day. Remember to specify a budget for the gift so that no one gets anything too extravagant! Also, ask each guest to bring some sort of food item. Have them include something red or pink with their dish for a great Valentine’s Day dinner effect. Have a massage therapist come over and teach your single female friends how to give great hand and foot massages. Then, play the Wright Family gift exchange2 with the gifts that your friends bought. If you find the Wright Game to be a little too high maintenance then you can do your own version of a gift exchange. Afterwards, serve hot cocoa with cinnamon red hots and pink popcorn while your single female friends watch a classic "chick flick."

2) Go to a Retirement Home

The author of the article that I mentioned above went to a nursing home for one Valentine’s Day and I thought it was such a great idea. Sure, spending a part of your Valentine’s Day in a retirement home may not seem very exciting but the memories that you make there might become some of your fondest. If you want to give this service activity a try, take Valentine’s gifts to some of the residents in the home. The gifts could include a CD with a romantic music selection, a deck of cards, exercise bands or anything else that is approved by the facilitator of the home. Visit with the residents at the home and ask them about their favorite Valentine’s Day memories. You may be surprised at how much you learn and how many times you laugh in the presence of these elderly folks who have many potentially didactic decades of experience.

Even if you are not involved in a serious relationship, you can still have a very memorable Valentine’s Day. Part II of Single Female Blues on Valentine’s Day? will provide additional suggestions that you can implement during the red-hot, red-heart holiday this year.
