Singing Tips for Guys
All my male readers, especially the ambitious Adams, who are considering wooing their respective Eves, with a little exhibition of their vocal chords; please spare a few minutes to read through the rest of this article on 'singing tips for guys'. It may well turn out to be the deciding factor in your lady love using her hands to romance you, rather than using them to cover her ears.

Singing Tips for Guys

Okay, I have a clarification to make before I proceed. The singing tips and tricks that will follow shortly, are directed not only towards the aforementioned category of male 'singers', but also the serious ones who are genuinely interested in bettering their vocals. However, if you happen to be a complete beginner to singing, there could be a possibility that you won't understand a few of the concepts mentioned below. In that case, you'd better familiarize yourself first, with some singing tips for beginners.

Range
One of the most important aspects of singing is knowing your vocal range, i.e. the lowest and the highest musical notes that you can comfortably sing in your true voice. Now, there are two things which need to be clarified at this point. By singing comfortably, I mean singing smoothly, i.e. without shrieking, screaming, shouting or straining your vocal chords to the point where they won't ever work again. Secondly, by true voice, I mean your actual voice, i.e. speech level voice (and not falsetto). Explaining the concept of falsetto, is something that is beyond the scope of this article.

Vocal Exercises
Once you know what your vocal range is, the next thing you need to do is regularly put your vocal chords to use with some vocal exercises, singing lessons, etc. You should practice going up and down a musical octave, you should practice scales, staccato, rhythm, etc. Never force yourself to hit a note that is outside your vocal range. You will only end up straining your vocal chords. Vocal range is different for every singer, and whether or not it can be increased also depends on each person's singing technique, method of practice, and type of voice.

Listening and Learning
If you're serious about becoming a good singer, you should make it a point to listen to different voices. Don't just remain in your comfort zone, or listen to singers from your favorite genre of music. Broaden your horizon and don't be afraid to explore new musical territory. If you would like a few suggestions regarding diverse male voices, here are a few singers I recommend: Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, Darren Hayes, Sting, Phil Collins, Enrique Iglesias, John Denver, Kenny Rogers, Sonu Nigam, James Brown, Bob Marley, Neil Diamond, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Ronan Keating, Bono and Paul McCartney.

General Singing Tips for Guys

Here are a few other singing tips and techniques that you should keep in mind:
  • Contrary to what you may hear from many people, smoking is not good for your vocal chords. It is NOT a way of getting more bass in your voice. So, if you're a smoker and a wannabe singer, you're gonna have to let go of one of them, because you certainly can't have both.
  • Practice your high notes, preferably, while in a standing position. It helps you to make better use of your diaphragm, and that is something that is very important if you want to sing well, and sing correctly.
  • Avoid eating or drinking anything that is extremely cold or extremely hot. It hinders the smooth functioning of your vocal chords and can cause your throat to go dry.
  • Devote a few minutes of your time every day, to performing breathing exercises. Your control over your breath plays a major role in how well you sing. Breathing exercises help in improving lung capacity and breath utilization. Here are some breathing exercises to improve lung capacity.
  • Last but definitely not the least, practice regularly and sincerely. Remember, there is no substitute for hard work.
These were some basic singing tips for guys. Youngsters may be interested in a few singing tips for kids. Enjoy the music! It is a joy that's unparalleled.
