Everything felt numb as people moved around Rhyken. He felt displaced from the world. Another person close to him was taken and he didn’t want to face it. ‘The first stage of grief is denial’ he thought as an insane giggle escaped his lips. He was sitting on the bow of the ship and suddenly was yanked back by someone. With a ‘thump’ he landed on his back and sprawled out on the deck. He didn’t feel any pain and was barely aware it was Khan who lifted him up.
"Rhyken..."
"No, don’t start," Rhyken slurred out trying to grasp onto reality.
"You need to talk to someone," Khan spoke as Rhyken snapped his head so that they came eye to eye.
"I don’t want to," Rhyken replied with a scowl.
"Rhy-" Khan started but was stopped by Rhyken grabbing the collar to his hood
"You know what! Screw denial, let’s just skip it and go straight to stage two. Anger. Don’t you fucking dare try to console me. I don’t need your pity! I am perfectly fine! Oh shit I’m back to denial!" Rhyken roared but soon psychotic laughter escaped him as he threw his head back.
Khan stared at him shocked. Rhyken rarely lost his composure and here he was yelling at him and laughing like a maniac. Rhyken let go of Khan, mumbled something darkly and stalked off to the other side of the ship avoiding everyone.
Sitting against the railing at the back of the Everlast, Rhyken breathed in and out. He reached up and touched his forehead. Humming the lullaby his Elf-mother used to sing to him he regulated his breathing. Reaching into his pocket he pulled out the Eollivye sapphire and traced his fingers over the sides of it.
He knew he was going to die, Rhyken thought as he frowned away sadness, trying to forget the weak smile Silvan made before he died, He knew the snake that had slain him and he just stood there and took it
When Khan approached Rhyken a second time he head the dark haired teen mumble something barely audible, he heard what his friend said but he felt Rhyken didn’t need to be pitied as he earlier stated.
"What?" said Khan slightly smiling, crouching down to Rhyken’s level.
Rhyken breathed in heavily and gave Khan a dirty look, "I said… Sorry."
This made Khan grin, Rhyken only apologized when he knew he had done something wrong and he almost never did anything wrong.
"I’m sick of people dying because of me," Rhyken said weakly.
"If you continue to think like that you’re gonna push everyone away," Khan replied patting his friend’s shoulder.
"Maybe that’s for the best," Rhyken muttered fiddling with the Sapphire in his hands.
"You don’t mean that!" Khan said distraught.
Rhyken buried his face in his hands again and sighed, "I don’t want to see any of you die Khan. Not you, not Jak, not Aubrey… not Willow," Definitely not Willow, he added mentally.
"We’re not going to die that easily, Rhy and we’re not going to abandon you. Even if you push us away we won’t back away so easily," Khan said patting his friend’s shoulder.
"How fortunate for me…" Rhyken grumbled but his lips twitched into a slight smile. He knew deep down that Silvan knew what he was doing. His father once told him that to be a hero was to fight to the last gasp and Silvan was a true hero, a hero he was supposed to be. In that moment Rhyken realised that it was time to face his destiny. He was going to challenge Lucien for the throne...and he would win back all of Elesnmíre. He smiled at the thought of him as King, as the king.
Khan eyes saddened a little, "You know Rhy... I’m sorry about Silvan…"
Rhyken stared at his friend silently, "Me too," he said simply and got up, "I need to talk to Willow."
Khan eyed him carefully and nodded, "She’s in her cabin."
Rhyken got up shakily and crossed the deck. Personally he wasn’t looking forward to her ‘How are you feeling’ sessions but he needed to discuss business with her. Approaching the Captain Cabin’s door he stopped in front of it and breathed out. Lifting his hand to the door he knocked hesitantly. After a few moments the door swung open to reveal a rather frazzled Willow. Her hair was messy and her clothes untidy like she had just woken up, her eyes widened slightly and slammed the door abruptly. After another few moments the door opened again to expose a now tidy Willow. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail and her clothes straightened.
"Come in," she muttered and left the door open.
Entering the room he tried to contain his smile. He watched her walk across the room and sit in a chair. He followed suit and sat in front of her.
"Rhyken are you.."
"I’m fine Willow, I came to speak to you about the Eollivye clan… now that Silvan is gone who will take over?"
Slightly taken back by Rhyken’s now calm exterior she slowly analyzed his face. It was back to its emotionless mask yet his silver eyes always betrayed him. They showed her he was trying to be strong but the sadness was still there.
"Why do you need to know?" She asked cryptically.
Rhyken blinked then smiled crookedly, "I asked first," he replied childishly.
"Very well," she sighed. When Rhyken was like this it was better to go along with him, even if he was slightly unbalanced at the moment, "I believe his brother was the heir to the title."
"When will he take over?"
"As soon as the clan’s gem stone is handed to him and he pledges to the Goddess of the Sky, Inern."
She could see the gears in Rhyken’s mind turning, "I see," he replied.
"Now… what are you planning?" she asked leaning forward. He looked up at her, his silver eyes danced with mischief and malice.
"Who me? Nothing of very much importance…" he said a dangerous smile slowly creeping across his face, "I’m just planning a rebellion."
Willow looked at him astonished, "You’re what?!" She practically shouted, standing up.
Rhyken looked at her seriously, "I’m going to arrange a war council and I want the Sky Lords, the Elf Elders and the Mage’s Guild masters to attend so i can convince them to join me."
"You can’t…" she whispered, "Why are you doing this?"
Rhyken’s gaze turned to steel, "Someone has to."
"Is this all because Silvan -"
"It’s what he would have wanted!" Rhyken yelled, standing up to meet Willow eye to eye, "He spent his whole life trying to save Elesnmíre and I will do the same!"
"But why does it have to be you?" Willow pleaded and a sad smile spread across his face.
"Willow, it can be only me and I know you know that," he whispered softy, "...will you help me?"
Looking into his eyes she saw the enormous resolve he had, he lost someone dear to him and to honour that person he would go against the entire empire. She saw the raw power that flowed into him and believed instantly with all her heart that he would lead them all into a new era.
"Yes… I’ll help you."
