CHAPTER 6:
Every endless night...
Has a dawning day...
Every dark sky...
Has a shining ray...
And it shines for you...
Baby can't you see?
You're the only one...
Who can shine for me... It's a private emotion...
That fills you tonight...
Alian's mobile chimed as he turned to look at it. Hell! Prudence's birthday... a party full of people with oily fawning from the birthday girl. It wasn't that he hated her. Just that she was a show off. No serious feelings just a show that she liked him. And he didn't like that. Sigh. Shrugging, he continued playing his guitar along with the song playing behind him. He kept the volume to a minimum. It was high time, Fanaa should have contacted him by now- a good morning message would have done.... It was 10 o' clock. He had sent her three messages saying - wake up princess! And - aren't u up yet?
No reply. 10.30- no reply. 11.30 no reply.
Alian knew better. His heart wasn't really into playing his guitar after 11.30 so he packed it in its case again. Before it was too late he had to see to it that she was alright. He had a quick bath, a shave and put on some casuals. Leaving his guitar in the bungalow, he settled in his car and drove towards her house. Hthe car screeched to a halt in front of Fanaa's place. The house was deserted, locked. He didn't mean to hurt anybody, it wasn't his intention, but he still wanted to see if Fanaa hwas alright. Where in hell was she? Carefully he crossed the lawn taking care to avoid the flowers. (he entered from the back gate, so he had to cross the lawn). A peek through the living room window told him she'd left in a hurry7. Her mobile was lying on the table. Next to a half eaten plate of scrambled eggs. A strange feeling gripped his chest as he retreated back to his car. She wasn't in her house. So where could she be?
Ambling along the road to Fanaa's house without his car, Alian looked around to see if she was in the river moon café. She wasn't there. Still, he went up to the owner- what was her name? Ah yes! Sarah.
Sarah looked up from her accounts book. It was that star who used to hang around with Fanaa. She passed him a smile and said, "What can I do for you, sir?"
Alian, hesitant because it would be impolite to just ask the whereabouts of his friend, said with a dry throat, "Uh... could I've a water bottle and French fries?"
She handed him the bottle as he paid for the stuff. When he saw her entering the kitchen to tell the cook, he called after her, "Ms. Sarah! I'd like the French fries to be packed and ready. I'll get them after sometime.... By any chance... um... did Fanaa happen to have visited you today?"
Sarah smiled to herself and said, "No sir, I didn't see her around. I'll let her know that you asked if I meet her."
Alian nodded thankfully and snatched his water bottle and began walking along the river. Hell! Where was she. Stupid girl... she didn't even have her mobile on. What in hell?
A few drops of rain blotched his T- Shirt. He hadn't brought the umbrella, it was lying in his car. His soon to be soaked clothes were not really good for gift shopping for Prudence. Shit. He didn't feel bad for himself or the party. He was worried out of his mind for Fanaa. She probably knew that he'd have wanted to know how was she, where was she. If she was alright or not? Why Fanaa?
For half an hour he continued walking along the river. The rain had stopped after a twenty minute heavy down pour. He decided to get his car and start searching for her. Heck... he had no idea what to do in such situations. What if she was kidnapped? What if she met with an accident? What if she was lying in a corner of some road... wherever she was there was only one thing he knew- she was cold and hungry and alone.

It was pouring as if all the water in the heavens was coming down. Hitting the steering wheel he wondered where she could be. It was driving him crazy. It had been almost an hour since the rain had started. Where are you Fanaa? Don't kill me this way. He was driving toward the river moon café when he noticed something in the very heavy rain. Sitting by the river side in the near impossible rain. Someone cold and hungry and alone....
Alian halted the car and gaped and gaped. Fanaa was sitting alone in the rain. Drenching herself. Her head on her knees. Her hands hugging her legs. Alian shook out of the trance, grabbed the umbrella and ran toward her. He was sure it was Fanaa. It was impossible to run in that rain. Though the ground was firm, the grass made it slippery. He lurched forward to balance himself. He rushed towards her and hunched up in front of her. She was not looking up. Just shivering with the cold and sobbing softly, he could hardly hear her over his on puffing and panting. Taking both his hands he lifted her head, her eyes were red and puffy from crying, tears mingled with the rain on her face. She shuddered violently and sobbed again. He looked at her once, her hair a mess, her fingers all wrinkled up, and so totally soaked.
It was an impulse, just a very strong and sudden. He didn't need to know the reason of her tears, the condition which made her so weak... an impulse. He left her face and put his arms around her shoulders, hugging her tightly as if it would protect her from the merciless rain. She started crying and then buried her head in his shoulder as he held her there. She clung to him like a baby would to its mother. Sobbing and crying. He held her still, hoping, praying that she was alright. Soothing her, whispering words of comfort, words which would never reach her. Touch was all she knew as sound. He stroked her back gently. Letting her cry. Half an hour later of the battering rain and absolute silence with Fanaa sitting there just holding her, Alaina finally got her to move. She was wobbly and still crying. How much pain was filled in that tiny heart. How long would it take to get it out...?
Alain helped her into the car. She sat there trying to avoid soiling the carpet or the seat.
"I'm getting it dry cleaned the coming weekend. Don't worry about the seats."
She sank into the seat and pulled out a tiny cotton hankey. Wiping her face with it she said in broken words, "I...I'm sorry," sniffing and sobbing she continued, "Sorry to have... worried you. Please" another sniff, "forgive me."
Alian just nodded and dialed the number to river moon café- said something about 'sorry for the delay... will get the French fries in a minute...' he stopped the car, and returned after a minute- with a new water bottle, a bunch of tissues and his cold packet of French fries. Handing her the tissues he drove towards her house. She fished for the key and said, "do you want to stay for a while?"
Alian shut the engine and said, "that goes," he sneezed thrice and continued, "without saying....'
Taking her hand he guided her towards the front door and into the warmth of the house.
