What is sleep apnea?

It is not only about snoring, it is more serious than that. It is a type of serious sleeping disorder, where when they are sleeping they will suffer from irregular breathing. This irregular breathing is not going to happen once but it will be accompanied by irregular pause. Each discontinuance in breathing may last for 10 to 20 seconds and it may occur more than 30 times in an hour. Yes, you stop breathing for that long, don't you think it is very scary for others to witness. Of course not you, because you won't realize it, just that it wakes you up, and you continue sleeping. There are usually two types – one is obstructive sleep apnea and the other one is central sleep apnea. If you are suffering from it, your breathing will either stopped or reduced significantly. In other words, this is one of the most common signs of sleep apnea, where it is noticeable when your breathing is stopped for 10 seconds or more than that. Most people know this sign, but here we would like to discuss the other signs of sleep apnea in depth.

Other Signs of Sleep Apnea:

Oxygen Level Will Drop

As mentioned earlier, the sufferer will experience an absolute discontinuance of airflow or significant reduction in their breathing. When the breathing stops it causes a decrease of at least a 4% oxygen saturation level within blood. This occurs as a direct result of reduction in the rate of transferring oxygen through the blood at the time breathing halts. This is one of the most prominent signs.

Sleep Will Be Disturbed

When sleep apnea happens, one's sleep is seriously disrupted. Sometimes, due to the severity of breathing cessation, the individual having the problem will stay wake fully. On the other hand, it may also be possible that the individual may come out from a deep and sound sleep, and later enter into a more small level of sleep. This is one of the most common signs of sleep apnea, and that is why it is calculated during sleep.

Suffer from Dry Throat and Morning Headache

These are other usual signs of sleep apnea. In the morning when the individual wakes up, they usually have a remarkably dry throat. Dry throat makes the individual feel uncomfortable and experiences a prolonged hardness in breathing. In addition to dry throat, they may fell tired not only from lack of sleep but also suffering from morning headache. Therefore they are not going to have a great day.

Experience Weariness and Daytime Sleepiness

Since they are suffering from a sleeping disorder pattern where they are incapable of having a deep, soothing sleep, they commonly suffer from immense weariness and feel sleepy during the day. Their sleep is habitually followed by loud snoring along with snorting sounds particularly during late night.

Insufficient Supply of Oxygen

One of the most typical signs of sleep apnea includes a sharp drop in the oxygen level, which poses a serious threat to cardiovascular system. This is because the cardiovascular system has to work harder in order to supply enough quantity of oxygen to all tissues. This indirectly cause the development of high blood pressure, ultimately increasing the risk for heart attack and stroke. Once the signs of sleep apnea is known, it will be easier for the individuals to seek treatment sooner.
