Shrewd Advice on Camping Food for the Cooking Challenged
Camping food can make or break your camping trip. Find out simple and straight-forward ways on how you can improve your cooking while camping.
A shrewd camper knows good camping food can make or break a camping trip. To find camping food that will make the cook and the campers happy, you need plan a little before you head out to the camp site. We recommend you stock up on foods that are easy to make and taste pretty good. Check out our list for items sure to add a little something extra to your next camping trip.
1. Burgers, dogs, and brauts. These are not only good items for the ballpark or the tailgate. Add these items to your list and you are sure to have happy campers. Only additional piece of advice we add here is to be sure to eat them early in the trip as these items tend to not keep that long.
2. MREs. Meals Ready to Eat have fed our military for years and can do the same for you. Since they require little cooking and great for backpacking, there is no reason not to bring a few of these along.
3. Freeze dried food. Everything that is about MREs is also great about freeze dried food. If you haven’t before, try this out. They are not only lightweight for your pack, they are also lightweight on your pocketbook.
4. Bring your favorite canned foods. There are a number of options to choose from whether it be ravioli, chili, spaghetti, tamales. Etc. Bring along the ones most people like and you will have a food item that is easy to make and easy to please your group.
5. Boxed foods. Raman noodles, dried noodle and rice dishes, rice a roni, and others make for great camp food. They tend to be fast to make, lightweight, and less likely to spill than other containers.
6. Breakfast items. pop tarts, cheerios, oatmeal, cream of wheat, cereal bars. These foods can get you going in the morning and require limited effort.
7. Trail mix and more. Choose a variety of choices here to make everyone happy. Dried fruit, beef jerky, and granola bars are popular items with backpackers and hikers.
8. Crackers over bread. By choosing crackers over bread, you have a food item that will last your whole trip. Add crackers to tuna, peanut butter or cheese, to have a nice little meal.
9. Menu dishes. These examples are great because everyone enjoys them.
a. Taco salad( chips, shredded lettuce, and pinto)
b. Pita Bread Pizza (Pizza sauce, cheddar or mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, pita bread).
10. Drink Selection. Powders work best. Avoid the liquids when you can as they tend to weigh more. Some of the best drink choices are instant tea, hot chocolate, tang, Gatorade powder, and instant coffee.
