Shoes

A fun poem about a toddler getting his first pair of shoes.
Mom carried me smartly
Into a store
Like she did
Those times before

Box after box
Lined the walls
With many colors
Strings and balls.

I saw a mirror
Tilting up to me
I climbed the bench
For all to see.

Just when I thought
Mom was done
She sat me down
And changed the fun.

"Shoes," she said
"Are for your feet.
You need these to walk
in the yard and street."

She put one on
in a magic motion
She tied the laces
with love and devotion.

I’d never felt anything
so strange yet inviting
It hugged my foot
but it wasn’t delighting.

Before I knew it
On came the other
And there I sat
Looking at mother

She set me down
I felt so strange
The room seemed to spin
The world had changed.

I took one step
Then two and three
My fears flew away
This was easy!

So that’s the story
of my first shoes.
Go ahead and try them!
You just can’t lose!
