Shampoo for Oily Hair
You see these commercials where the greasy haired girl is all sad. Then she uses 'the magic shampoo' that transforms her hair into super shiny and healthy hair! Then she's all smiley, and flaunting her hair with her new found happiness. Well, there are many hair care products for oily hair, but which ones do you choose? This article guides you in selecting the right and effective shampoo for oily hair.
Shampoos for Oily Hair
What should you look for in a shampoo for oily hair? The answer is astringent. Astringent removes excess oil from the hair. There are herbal and fruit based astringents. Some of the fruit extracts to look for in a shampoo for greasy hair are olive, lemon, and other citrus fruit extracts. A good herbal shampoo for oily hair should contain extracts of aloe, tea tree oil, rosemary, sage or chamomile. Under oily hair type, there are different sub types. Some of them are oily color treated hair, oily thin hair, oily fine hair, and hair with oily scalp and dry ends. So let's look at the best shampoos for all types of oily hair.
Shampoo for Oily Hair (Normal Oily): If you have normal oily hair, use a 'normal to oily hair shampoo'. Wash your hair with this shampoo daily.
Shampoo for Oily Color Treated Hair: As you have colored your hair, you should not use a strong shampoo. Look for a low volumizing shampoo that can be used daily. Stick to clear shampoos, rather than the creamy ones, which might make your hair more oily. Also, look for the ingredient panthenol (pro-vitamin B5) in the shampoo for oily color treated hair.
Shampoo for Oily Scalp and Dry Ends: For this type of hair, use a 'normal to oily shampoo'. After you have shampooed your hair, use a hair care product like a deep conditioner on the dry ends, keep for 2 minutes and wash. Another solution would be to get a trim at the dry ends, or get a short haircut.
Shampoo for Very Oily Hair: If you have very oily hair, wash the hair twice a day. Use a strong astringent based shampoo. A good choice would be a shampoo containing tea tree oil.
Shampoo for Oily Fine Hair: For this hair type, look for a clear shampoo that can be used daily. Also, see if the shampoo contains panthenol, which helps to thicken hair. Wash your hair daily with this shampoo.
Shampoo for Oily Thin Hair: Hair loss can occur at any age. For thin hair, use a volumizing shampoo and wash your hair daily. Do not condition your hair, or if you want to use a conditioner, use only at the ends. Along with the shampoo use a volumizing mousse or hairspray.
Tips for Oily Hair
- Lemon is a great cleanser for oily hair, and it also works wonders for dandruff. Squeeze the juice of two lemons, and add 1 cup of water to it. After shampooing your hair, use this lemon and water mix on the scalp and hair. Leave for 2 minutes and then wash.
- You can also make your own shampoo. Mix in your regular mild shampoo, half spoon aloe gel and one spoon lemon juice. Wash your hair with this mix. More on homemade shampoo recipe.
- Do not use a conditioner. Sebum is a natural conditioner, and being oily haired, you already have plenty of it!
- Avoid brushing or combing your hair frequently, as this increases the production of sebum.
- For very oily hair type, wash your hair twice a day. More on how to wash your hair
