Shakespeare's Deliberations On Obese, Overweight Men

Shakespeare's famous quote about "fat" men is doubly applicable in the 21st Century epidemic of an overweight and obese population in the developed nations. If you don't know this famous Shakespearian quote you must read this article!
Quote "Let me have men about me that are fat; sleek-headed men and such as sleep o'nights; Yond Cassius has a lean and hungry look; He thinks too much, such men are dangerous." Unquote

- Caesar, an excerpt from "Julius Caesar". William Shakespeare 1564-1616

You are surely conversant with the concluding payoff of that legend as relates to "sleek-headed men, with lean and hungry looks"?

I don't know of any substantiated evidence that "sleek-headed men, with lean and hungry looks", are any extra dangerous than plump or obese men? Nevertheless; in William Shakespeare's century, he must have accrued considerable worldly knowledge to that fact, to have included such in his distinguished play; "Julius Caesar".

What are your thoughts about William's quote when applied to the 21st Millennium?

My feelings are that Caesar could feel out of harm's way in one of the prosperous nations in the year 2008! Why? Because he could be largely (pun not intended) encompassed by plump men, who could never, ever be possibly thought of as possessing a "lean and hungry look"!

In essence a man or woman possessing a "lean and hungry look" in the modern world is rapidly becoming a minority "crowd". Plus the way the first world realms are heading with over food consumption and sever lack of exercise...not looking good whatsoever!

Yesterday evening, I dropped into the local shopping center for a spot of late evening browsing. It was around 6 PM. I made myself comfy in my special coffee bar to enjoy a flat white...with 99% no fat milk; naturally! The multitudes rushed past. After ten or so minutes I found myself mentally noting the collection of slightly chubby, to grossly overweight passersby bumbling past with shopping trolleys full of packages of unhealthy looking junk food! Sadly, they hugely out-numbered the "lean and hungry looking people"!

Most trolley trundlers had their children following them. I observed that exceedingly; the average amount of passing young children also looked considerably well (over?) fed...or is that exceedingly overweight! The children's parents were also well nurtured with excess fatty folds in all directions.

I examined the coffee drinkers around my table. Once again I was dismayed at the huge percentage of obese men, women and young kids in such a small area! The alarming thing was that many were tucking into huge cream topped coffees, to wash down very tasty, sweet, mouth watering, enticing cakes; usually consumed with a large dob of cream on the plate!

I thought I must appear as if I could not afford to also enjoy such tasty cakes. I was only one of the few coffee sippers not chowing down enormous masses of additives, pure fat and thousands of calories I did not need. Well, you get the picture...all those delicious morsels that change skinny men, women and children into big, fat; and in the end "overweight obese" people.

Please observe that the point I am trying to state is that this was at 6 PM! Most of these chubby men, women and children were busily woofing down "fat laden" food at a time when, surely of necessity, these parents and children, should have been at home providing their little "chubby" children with some of the must have "five veggies and fish"; or similar. Not tucking into junk food in a cafe helping their children towards a destiny of early heart attacks, strokes, sugar diabetes two, and any variety of cancers. And many of those children were being openly encouraged into the world of "childhood obesity"!

The message I would send to these apparently "negligent" adults is this. Think carefully about the future health and wellness of your children. Cook and serve the little children a healthy and nutritious evening meal. Parents; you are responsible for the health of your children...no-one else.

Substituting probably your children's most important; and perhaps their only home cooked meal for the day with take away, or eat in junk food' is hardly being a responsible parent. And certainly, without a doubt not filling your kids up with "junk food"at 6 PM on a Thursday night!
