Shady Secrets (Chapter 5)
Finally back!
Okay so I feel like I have some explaining to do. Besides a little writer's block I've been EXTREMELY busy. Family visiting, 3 birthdays, mom going to the hospital, school, and taking on more hours at work. It's been a hectic couple of months but I haven't forgotten about my story! Sooo here we go :)
-------------------------------------------------------
The lady in the pond was our phys. Ed. teacher, Ms. Paige. I couldn't tell at the time because it had been so dark. Someone at this school has to be doing this. I mean it was just too much of a coincidence that every person that's been killed has either attended Shady High or taught here. I'll be willing to bet everything I own that the killer will be at the town fair tonight.
"Step right up! Dunk Mr. Bayes for a dollar!" Jenny kept yelling over and over while Mr. Bayes sat on the dunk tank cringing every time someone threw the ball.
Mr. Bayes was actually a good looking guy, maybe late twenties, early thirties, sandy brown hair and brown eyes. He didn't look like the typical high school science teacher.
I was standing around collecting the baseballs and putting them into the bucket when I heard him.
"It's okay, I'm here, you can stop thinking about me."
I turned around and standing there was River, I just rolled my eyes and turned back around.
"And why exactly would I think about you?"
"Because you find me irresistibly charming." He said as he stepped in front of me.
"Oh, I do? Because I was under the impression I thought you were an egotistical ass. My mistake."
"Ah, but you said the other day you don't think of me that way. Am I right?"
"We all make mistakes now and then."
"Well I'm not going to argue with you on that, I mean look at your boyfriend."
"Excuse me?" He stepped closer.
"You know you and Mr. Personality won't work out. Besides, he doesn't excite you. He's safe."
"Really? And you know this how? Because last time I checked I am the one in a relationship with him not you."
"Okay, okay. Well for your sake I hope you're right." He gave me his lop-sided grin and walked away. That boy I swear, where does he get his nerves from because I'd like to get some like his too.
Jason Harper, quarterback of the football team, dunked Mr. Bayes into the water for the fifth time tonight.
"Good job Jason!" Jenny congratulated him.
"Alright, I'm taking a break! I'm starving, I'll be back later. Laken would you take my spot please?"
"Sure..." I wish I could've said no. I didn't really feel like being dunked tonight.
Ethan finally showed up an hour into the fair and three dunks in. It was safe to say I looked like a drowned rat.
"Sorry! I was playing basketball and lost track of time!" He called out.
"It's okay, I'll be down as soon as Mr. Bayes gets back!" He nodded and grabbed a baseball.
"What are you doing?!"
"I'm going to get you down, hold your breath babe."
"You won't make it!" I said laughing and I was right he missed the first one.
"I just have to warm up that's all." In spite of himself he was laughing too as he missed the second one.
"Don't get too comfortable, as they say third time's a charm." Now he was right, he hit the target sending me into the nasty water below.
Thankfully Mr. Bayes showed up to relieve me and let me take a twenty minute break.
Ethan and I walked around the fair and played a few games. He even won me a giant panda bear. Ethan was really sweet and I really felt like I was falling for him. It's not even about his looks, he's kind, compassionate, and he always puts how I feel first.
"I can't believe you, along with the rest of the town, has to see me like this. I look ridiculous."
"I think the whole sea creature look works for you." I made a face and shoved him, making him laugh.
"I'm just kidding. You look gorgeous, as you always do." He said while shoving me back
"That's better."
"You look cold, here." He took off his jacket and draped it on my shoulders.
"Thank you."
"Anytime, Lake." he whispered, looking into my eyes. His own eyes sparkling. "Can we talk? Somewhere private, well as private as we can get."
"Sure." We sat down on a bench away from all the excitement, but still in sight of everything.
"So.. What did you want to talk about?" I asked.
He turned towards me and held my eyes with his.
"I really like you Lake. I know we haven't been together long, but I think you're amazing. Actually, that's a lie."
My heart sank at his words, he must've saw the hurt look on my face. He laughed lightly and cupped my cheek. "I don't just like you Lake, I love you... I completely understand if you can't say it back right now, and I don't expect you too but just know I can wait forever."
I was speechless. While he was right I couldn't say I loved him right then, there was no denying I was falling hard for him. And him saying he would wait until I was ready, made me fall even harder.
"I got you something. It's nothing special, just something I wanted to give you to remind you of tonight, of what I said."
He handed me a little black box with a white satin bow on top of it.
When I opened it I saw a silver, diamond encrusted, heart pendant on a thin silver chain. When I didn't say anything he started.
"If you don't like it I can return it. Really, you don't have to feel like..."
I cut him off, "Shut up." I threw my arms around his neck and kissed him. He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me closer, I pulled back after a while of kissing him like that and looked up at him.
"It's absolutely beautiful, I love it." He broke out into a grin wide enough you'd think his face would crack. I turned around and pulled my hair to one side while he clasped the necklace around my neck.
"It is beautiful." He whispered, "But not nearly as beautiful as the girl it's resting on."
"Sometimes I think you're too good to be true." I whispered back.
"I could say the same, come on let's get you back to your booth."
I groaned, I was almost considering taking the F, but I knew I couldn't.
Ethan left shortly after and I promised him I'd call him when I got home. Thirty minutes later I was heading to my car when I heard a familiar voice behind me. Sighing I turned around, "Why do you keep following me?"
River stood there acting shocked with one hand over his heart, "I'm hurt Laken, what would make you think that?"
"Hm, I don't know. Maybe the fact that you're always coming up behind me trying to startle me."
"I wasn't trying to startle you, my bike's right over there." He said pointing in the direction of my car, his bike was three spots over. I blushed, I felt like an idiot. Here he was, walking to his bike and I accuse him of stalking me.
"Sorry." I muttered. He caught up with me and looked over at my face, even in the dark he could probably see my blush. I stopped at my car and turned to him.
"That color looks good on you." He murmured as he stepped closer and ran the back of his fingers across my cheek, chuckling when the color deepened. For that second his fingers grazed my cheek my heart started to beat rapidly and it felt as if a current of electricity was flowing through me. I stepped back instantly and slapped him across the face. He looked shocked, but this time he wasn't acting.
"You KNOW I'm dating Ethan. You can stop this little game."
"This isn't a game, Laken. Like I've said before, he's wrong for you. Some day you'll come to your senses." Anger and something else flashed in his eyes for a split second. Was it hurt? As soon as it came, it was gone and with that he walked away. I just watched as he got onto his bike and sped off. I let out the breath I had been holding since he walked away and sank into the drivers seat. I heard something rustle underneath me, I shifted to the side and searched for what was making the noise. It was a folded piece of paper, I opened it and in neat handwriting was written:
"How bitter a thing it is to look into happiness through another man's eyes!
You will be mine."
A chill crawled up my spine. This note was different from the last. It was menacing.
---------------------------------------------------
So here it is, I'm working on the next chapter now :)
The story isn't close to being over but who do you want Laken to end up with?
Ethan or River?
